Job Details:

The role of the Respiratory Coordinator will be to provide clinical direction of staff, responsibility of day to day operation, maintain and review quality improvement, act as liaison between the Respiratory Department and other patient care services. Oversees, performs and maintains the daily function and staffing of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. Oversees, performs and maintains daily function of the Arterial Blood Gas Laboratory. Further responsibility will include review of scheduling to maintain adequate staffing, including granting of scheduled time off. In addition the Coordinator will assist the Clinical Manager with new program implementation and cost effectiveness of all departmental operations. RESPONSIBILITIES CLINICAL EXPERTISE

  • Maintains clinical proficiency and current knowledge of all aspects of Respiratory Therapy. Is able to perform all responsibilities as required by the Advanced Respiratory Practitioner’s job description. Performs Pulmonary Function Testing. Assures, implements and is responsible for requirements set forth by CAP/NYSDOH for the Arterial Blood Gas laboratory.

  • Serve as a resource for the Respiratory staff and other members of the health care team. Participates in daily critical care rounds with staff, physicians and nursing. Acts as a consultant to physicians, nursing, and department staff. Collaborates with staff on daily plan of care for patients.

  • Provides departmental statistics, as directed.

  • Actively participates in ongoing departmental service development and implementation. Expanding PFT business/hours. Assists in education of staff and ensures staff participation in quality initiatives, as assigned.

  • Promotes the effectiveness and utilization of all departmental equipment.

  • Verifies that documentation for all therapeutic diagnostic procedures are performed in accordance with department policies and procedures.

  • Actively organizes educational programs, as related to department. Seeks opportunities to provide staff with AARC approved CEU staff in-services.

    OPERATIONAL

  • Assures the adequate staffing of Respiratory departments to meet patient care needs. Develops and monitors staff implementation of departmental policies and procedures. Assures adherence to all standards of patient care for departmental staff members.

  • Responsible for all aspects of individual supervision for all staff assigned including interviewing, hiring, orientation, goal setting, progressive discipline/ termination and annual performance reviews in a timely manner. Initiates retention activities, i.e. recognizing exceptional staff. Develops, mentors and motivates staff to assure the provision of safe quality patient care.

  • Monitors and ensures competency of staff in all aspects of Respiratory Therapy. Pulmonary Function testing and blood gas laboratory.

  • Ensures staff involvement and compliance in assigned departmental and hospital-wide Quality Improvement Plans.

  • Delegates responsibilities fairly and appropriately.

    FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Assists the manager by actively participating in the development and adherence to all departmental budgets. Maintains inventory control. Oversees daily and accurate billing. information for all therapeutic & diagnostic procedures. Maximizes utilization of equipment and maintains accurate records of rentals.

  • Assists and collaborates with the Clinical Manager regarding department expenses:Identifies cost containment measures. Provides detail/input and verifies accurate monthly departmental expenses.

    LEADERSHIP/PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Is an active and participating member in at least one Health Care Professional Association relating to areas of responsibility (i.e. AARC).

  • Demonstrates effective decision making in clinical and administrative situations.

  • Participates, reviews and recommends new and old equipment evaluation. Participates and reports on new therapeutic implementation. Participates and identifies opportunities for clinical trials and provides unbiased analysis. Assists in RCE preparation by providing data for the purpose of cost justification.

    EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

  • Objectively communicates pertinent information vertically and horizontally within the organization. Ensures that assigned department holds staff meetings. Provides accurate and timely feedback to all department staff.

  • Interfaces constructively with physicians and other Health Care professionals on an ongoing basis.

  • Reports appropriate problems or concerns to the Clinical Manager.

  • Responds in a timely manner and provides relevant information to manager/director when it is needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years experience, including Pulmonary Function Testing and Blood Gas laboratory.

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

    EDUCATION

  • Associate Degree of Applied Science for Respiratory Care

  • CoARC Approved program (Commission of Accreditation for Respiratory Care)

  • Baccalaureate, preferred

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care.

  • Certified in BLS.

  • Certified or registered in Pulmonary Function by the National Board for Respiratory Care preferred. CPFT required within 3 months of hire.

  • NYS Licensed Respiratory Therapist

  • Appropriate Federal, State and local licensing requirements.

    OTHER

  • If applicable, the individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.

  • The ability to effectively deal with patients, employees, physicians, other health care provider and visitors.

  • Meets the requirements established by EmployeeHealth Services.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively function as a health care team member.

  • Demonstrated necessary to perform teaching and leadership duties as required.

  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and ability to work effectively and efficiently in situations.
