Job Title: Test Engineer

Job Description

The Test Engineer is responsible for end-to-end testing, evaluation, and failure analysis of equipment/products, which are structural and mechanical in nature. They will work in both R&D and quality environments, interpreting product requirements to determine the necessary testing methods. The role involves designing and setting up tests, monitoring and collecting data, and creating the final analysis and reporting to ensure new products meet expectations or to determine the cause of quality issues.

Responsibilities

  • Construct written test procedures to effectively grade product performance.

  • Design test fixturing utilizing CAD and engineering calculations (SolidEdge preferred).

  • Construct/fabricate test fixtures (sawing, milling, welding, electrical wiring, PLC programming) and/or contract out subcomponents.

  • Evaluate industry-recognized test standards (ANSI, ASTM) for applicability and incorporation into testing.

  • Provide engineering support to worldwide locations.

  • Inspect failed components and determine the root cause of failure.

  • Research and introduce new technology and methods into the Test Department to expand capabilities and increase throughput.

  • Execute, analyze, and document tests using company test procedures and reporting guidelines.

  • Manage multiple projects at once and prioritize to meet timelines.

  • Devise test methods to evaluate new technologies and make recommendations for their implementation into the product.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering (Master's preferred).

  • Knowledge of test instrumentation (strain gages, transducers, signal conditioning) for test and troubleshooting.

  • Comfortable in a manufacturing and/or fab shop environment.

  • Experience in test fixture design, engineering calculations, welding, machining, part procurement, and assembly.

  • Ability to communicate test results in a format that is easily interpreted by both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently.

  • Capability to manage multiple short and long-term projects simultaneously (typically 3-5 at a time).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers.

  • IFPS Hydraulics Certification.

  • Experience with microcontrollers, PLCs, or other embedded controllers for test fixturing.

  • Proficiency with parametric 3D modeling software (SolidEdge, SolidWorks, AutoCAD).

  • Advanced knowledge in failure analysis, metallurgy, and weld engineering.

  • Knowledge and experience with FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and Root Cause documentation.

  • Understanding of CANbus communication (J1939, CANopen).

  • Familiarity with Reliability Engineering and Statistical Analysis for Life Predictions.

Work Environment

The work environment consists of 80% lab/shop work, including test set-up, monitoring, and shop work, and 20% office-based tasks such as documentation, analysis, and reporting. The Test Engineering team includes an Engineering Manager with 15 years of experience, an Engineer with 11 years of experience, and an Engineer with 1 year of experience.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/hr.
