General Summary:

This role will have overall strategic and delivery responsibility in delivering an overall solution for an assigned transformation journey that results in a significant competitive advantage for Unum by working with key initiative leaders and by applying agile methodology. The incumbent will lead a team that is responsible for the design and implementation of (continuous) changes within the area of responsibility in line with the change agenda (within budget, timelines and quality standards) considering the overall strategy of the Operations and Technology organizations. Responsible for (long term) planning and directing an organization's strategic agenda including long range goals within the area of assignment. Serving as a key conduit between admin systems enterprise wide and the technology organization. This role primary focus will be on transformation, however, will have oversight of a small team of technology professionals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Setting up and managing an integrated Business Delivery roadmap for their assigned journey that drives end-to-end Business and IT change leveraging Agile and the use of a core team to improve speed and quality

  • Within the team, or with support from IT leadership peers, will identify, design and implement state of the art technology and/or transformation solutions to meet Unum’s current and future business needs.

  • Evaluate technology and transformation trends and introduce new ideas and strategies to capitalize on opportunities for continuous improvements

  • Partner closely with business leaders to understand the business needs of our customers.

  • Analyze and effectively communicate complex business and IT topics to help business leaders identify and understand transformation solutions and how it improves operational efficiency.

  • Develop and execute operational plans (including budget) of the department aligned with the overall strategy of the Operations and Technology organizations

  • In charge on design and implementation of the change agenda by consulting, pro-active informing, monitoring and steering the change activities

  • Accountable for the innovation, standardization and optimization of associated products and processes as well as applicable technology

  • Manage the work of the staff, execute proactive resource management and is responsible for the quality of team output, timelines and efficiency of team activities

  • Contribute to knowledge management and skills development within the area of responsibility including steering on standardization and simplification of activities

  • Effectively collaborate with and influence a variety of internal business partners (e.g. Global Services (IT), members of the sales organization, administration, marketing, claims and underwriting) in ensuring that the design and development of our offerings align with our strategic intent and the evolving market opportunities

  • Manage cross initiative decisions / tradeoff evaluations

  • Build, lead, develop, mentor and coach a team of professionals aligned to journey efforts including their operational plans and strategy for grow and run teams. This includes the management of a small team of technology professionals.

  • Lead the development, enhancement and run efforts across assigned IT teams

Job Specifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree. Masters preferred.

  • 7-10+ years experience in technology or transformation management or equivalent relevant experience

  • Proven ability to manage multiple transformation and/or technology delivery teams

  • Strong understanding of the insurance product lifecycle including areas of sales, underwriting, acquisition, benefits, etc. Ability to lead and manage a mixture of technical and operational resources across a range of locations.

  • Proven experience implementing customer-oriented solutions to improve customer experience and/or operational effectiveness.

  • Exhibits strong leadership skills, including the ability to effectively partner, problem solve, and influence others.

  • Unique combination of problem solving, analytical and strong project management skills

  • Must be a strategic thinker but able to execute at a tactical level

  • Proven ability to understand and balance distribution needs and considerations with risk management considerations to achieve desired objectives.

  • Strong understanding of the technology needs required to effectively develop, enhance and service products

  • Understanding of regulatory environment, especially as it relates to the processing of claims payments

  • Proven abilities regarding talent development, inclusive of attracting, developing and retaining talent

  • Proficient in cultivating a strong personal network across the organization

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$163,700.00-$320,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
