What you will do.
ATS technicians are trained to provide quality maintenance on our growing fleet of over-the-road trucks and trailers. You'll perform a variety of work including, inspecting, diagnosing, replacing and repairing brake systems ABS, electrical components, steering systems, multi-axle alignments, hydraulic systems, welding/fabrication of steel and aluminum and related equipment. You'll work independently while being part of a great team!
What does it take to be an ATS Technician?
The Tractor Technician Level 1 position is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of ATS tractors by using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to make sure the tractor is safe to be on the road.
Education and Experience
Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/or seven years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc.
Commercial Driver’s Class A or B.
Must be DOT certified and have a working knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters.
Have brake certification and working knowledge of brake systems.
Have OSHA tire training.
Be proficient with welding MIG and aluminum.
Have 609 A/C certification.
Have ATS brake and wheel end training.
Have forklift certification.
Be able to operate all related shop equipment.
Good communications skills (written, verbal, listening),
Competent in using computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
Good electrical troubleshooting skills.
Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.
Diagnostic level 1.
With occasional help from someone is always capable of diagnosing the problem.
With occasional help from someone is always able to find the root cause of each problem.
Without help is capable of diagnosing all problems on most systems.
Always able to look up and follow most manufacturing diagnostic steps.
Able to use all personal and shop tools to aid with diagnostics.
Able to use all diagnostic tools for all manufactures.
Knows and is capable of using most parts of all manufacture diagnostic software.
Without help able to look into vehicle past records and reports to always successfully diagnose a problem.
Communication Level 1.
A Level 1 technician can successfully interview a driver to get to the root cause of the problem. Properly explain Complaint, Cause, and Correction so leadership, coworkers, warranty, and drivers can understand every aspect of the problem, cause of the problem, and what was done to fix the problem. A Level 1 tech will be able to explain problems and repairs being made to another person with the same level of expert knowledge. Communication of where they are at in the process of the repair will be known. Communication will always be open and transparent to coworkers and leadership.
Successful warranty submissions Level 1.
A level 1 technician will always successfully submit warranty claims. This is followed up with a successful repair, part documentation, and data collection.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform routine inspections, maintenance and repair on diesel tractors using ATS and OEM guidelines to ensure that the tractors are operating correctly to minimize unplanned failures.
Perform all necessary/scheduled preventative maintenance services e.g., oil and grease, air filters, etc.
Complete DOT inspections on outgoing trucks to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.
Inspect, troubleshoot and repair engines, drivetrain, hydraulic, fuel, air, electrical, HVAC, brakes and suspension.
Install and work with all types of onboard electronic equipment. ELD's, cameras. Etc.
Inspect and repair internal engine parts, injectors, timing gears, camshafts, etc.
Inspect and repair internal driveline part, transmission gears, and differential gears.
Perform diagnostics and advanced diagnostics with OEM software.
Perform ECM Data updates and program ECM data.
Record all parts and repair work into computer system to track cost of repairs.
Maintain a clean and professional work environment including tools, equipment, shop, and customer’s tractors / sleepers to high appearance standards.
Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed and PPE is used at all times.
Perform new vehicle inspections and final assembly including factory warranty repairs and computer diagnostics and programing.
Participate in online OEM training.
Attend factory sponsored training classes as required to maintain certifications required for warranty.
Performs work as outlined on repair orders efficiently and accurately in accordance with dealership, factory, and customer standards.
Meet level 1 standard time rating (95%+)
Meet level 1 rework frequency (<=1per year)
Meet level 1 Quality Assurance Performance (97-99.9%)
Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the job.
Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
Works within budget that is set for the department.

Specific Job Related Tasks and Capabilities:
Be able to perform PM / DOT inspections on your own, and be fully capable of finding all needed repairs on the equipment to bring it to ATS and DOT standards.
Exceptional understanding of the VM Task system and possess a solid understanding of building a repair plan for each tractor that you work on by using appropriate Standard Jobs for the repairs needed.
Will be DOT and Forklift Certified.
Demonstrate superior ability and understanding of lighting and electrical systems. Can diagnose all lighting and electrical issues without help and make the repairs to ATS and DOT standards.
Demonstrate superior ability and knowledge of the electronic engine control systems and exhaust aftertreatment systems and how to diagnose and repair various issues within them. Understands all aspects of the OEM software systems for diagnostics without help.
Demonstrate superior ability and knowledge of the ABS systems and how to diagnose and repair various issues within them. Understands all aspects of the ABS software systems for diagnostics without help.
Demonstrate superior ability and understanding In-Cab technology systems, ELD, cameras, accident mitigation, etc. Can diagnose all issues on all systems without help and make repairs to ATS and OEM standards.
Will have superior skills and knowledge to perform all APU mechanical and be able to correctly diagnose & repair all APU electrical and inverter systems without help.
Demonstrate superior ability and knowledge to diagnose and repair all chassis system assemblies such as suspension, drive line, steer and drive axles, manual and automated transmission, differentials, etc. Can diagnose all issues on all systems without help and make repairs to ATS and DOT standards.
Will be A/C certified and able to diagnose and repair all HVAC systems without help.
Will be brake inspection certified. Demonstrate a superior understanding on how to replace brakes, wheel seals, S-Cams, Chambers… etc. and can perform these procedures without help from anyone, all repairs completed to ATS and DOT specs.
Will be Tire Certified and have a solid understanding of the tire program and demonstrated on the floor through your work day.
CCC- Will have exceptionally written and communication skills and can write tech stories that are easy to read and have all the proper information based upon the task at hand.
Expected to follow all Warranty and Safety SOP’s as well as all other documented SOP’s posted on the ATS intranet.
Will demonstrate superior IDRIVE values at all times. Adheres to company expectations and policies.
A hands on mentor and train for up to 90 days with new hires, either on ATS way and computer system or hands on training and coaching. Will be able to work and train on all pieces of equipment ATS owns.

Compensation & Benefits:
The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $30.00 - $37.00 plus $4/hr. 2nd shift differential. This position may be eligible for a $2000.00 sign-on bonus, subject to eligibility requirements. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work. In addition to the hourly rate of pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
