Pontiac General Hospital Recreational Therapist in Pontiac, Michigan

Plans, organizes, and administers medically prescribed recreational therapy programs for patients in an effort to increase level of functioning.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Meets patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by assessing patients and determining recreational therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription. 2. Assist patient, identifies and achieves treatment goals related to recreation, relaxation, and leisure in order to achieve positive outcomes. 3. Promotes maximum independence by selecting and constructing therapies according to patient's physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest. 4. Evaluates results of recreational therapy by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending and implementing adjustments and modifications. 5. Collaborates in treatment and discharge planning with multidisciplinary team and contributes to patient care conferences. 6. Documents patient care services in patient and department records. 7. Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.

SUPERVISION: Reports to the Manager of Social Work and Discharge Planning

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in recreational therapy from an accredited program.
  2. MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: Experience in a psychiatric setting.
  3. COMMUNICATION WITH OTHERS: Consults with physicians, nurses, social workers and other health care workers; contributing to patient care conferences.
  4. ANALYTICAL DEMANDS: BLS (annual requirement), Recipient Rights Training, CPI-Nonviolent crises intervention. Complies with federal, state and local, legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  5. CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE: National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), CTRS Certification thru NCTRC.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Long periods of standing and walking. Must be physically able to manage patients per CPI-Non-Violent Crisis Intervention approved techniques, using the least restrictive intervention.
  2. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works in a well-lighted, well-ventilated environment.
  3. EQUIPMENT USED: Uses equipment necessary to perform specific tasks/duties.
