About the Position:
The Pocatello Regional Office is seeking a Fisheries Technician (\$17.32, benefitted) to join the fisheries management team for the 2025 field season. This position will primarily focus on assisting with sampling efforts on regional reservoirs and rivers. The selected applicant will gain valuable experience interacting with the public and surveying both warm and cold-water species using a variety of sampling gears. Office and laboratory work will extend into the winter. Applicants may apply through February 28, 2025, but the announcement may close early if qualified candidates are found.
General Information:
Fieldwork generally consists of 40-50 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, though night, weekend, and holiday work will be required at times. Some duties will require overnight camping in remote settings, camping equipment and groceries will be provided on these trips. A camp trailer will be available for extended stays. With or without reasonable accommodation, incumbents must be able to hike up to ten miles a day over rugged terrain carrying a large backpack; stand and work in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; handle live and dead fish, lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in rough terrain and work in difficult weather conditions.
Responsibilities:
From April to the end of June, this position will primarily be responsible for operating and maintaining an electric weir on the Blackfoot River to sample the Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout spawning run. This technician will be responsible for processing trapped fish and collecting biological data. During this same timeframe, this position will also assist with pelican hazing efforts on both the Blackfoot River and Blackfoot Reservoir. After July 1, primary duties will include assisting with fish population surveys on streams, lakes, and reservoirs. Sampling methods will include gill netting, boat and backpack electrofishing, trap netting and trawling. Other duties will include conducting occasional creel surveys, tagging fish with T-bar anchor tags or PIT tags, processing otoliths and spines for aging fish, entering data into the statewide database, operating, maintaining and trailering boats and other equipment and instructing inexperienced seasonal staff in sampling protocols. The technician will be responsible for data collection and management, as well as maintaining a variety of motorized equipment.
