SME Coatings Inspector Technician in Plymouth, Michigan

*The Opportunity:  *

We work with a wide assortment of clients on diverse and unique projects, often associated with the rehabilitation or new construction of various sites, buildings, and infrastructure. Our projects span multiple sectors, including commercial, manufacturing, industrial, education, hospitality, automotive, water treatment, refineries, and transportation. Depending on the project, your position could include a range of work activities. Work opportunities would include, but may not be limited to, daily site visits to local coatings related project jobsites, helping with other types of reviews and materials testing on sites or within one of our laboratories, assisting with highway structures assessment throughout the state, or occasional options to travel to perform evaluations and testing at project sites or within manufacturing or fabrication facilities in other states. Your primary responsibilities would be to work independently in the field to perform coatings or fireproofing related inspections. Your additional responsibilities would include work as part of a team, or independently following training, to perform additional types of laboratory testing or field reviews on various project sites.  

*Responsibilities: *

  • Perform field observation and testing of applied coatings and fireproofing. This includes monitoring and documenting coating preparation and application activities. Testing would include such things as measuring profiles, recording environmental conditions, measuring wet and dry film coating thickness, holiday testing, adhesion testing, etc. 
  • Perform additional types of field testing and specialty reviews on or within building constructions sites, DOT roadway projects, manufacturing facilities, fabrication shops, and other locations. Field reviews may include review and material testing services related to structural steel and components, load testing of anchors, or occasionally assisting with concrete, soil, or other testing as needed to support other services groups within SME.   
  • Perform laboratory testing as needed within our Materials Laboratory, including testing of welder performance and procedure qualifications, high strength bolts and anchor rods, load testing of assemblies, ASTM testing of various construction materials, etc. 

*Requirements: *

NACE, SSPC, or AMPP Level I Coatings Inspector certification. 

High School Diploma or GED.   

Proficient with commonly used computer programs and phone apps (e.g. Microsoft word/excel, PDFs, email, web browsers, maps, etc.). 

Ability to handle physical demands, such as lifting and carrying equipment (up to 50lbs repetitively), regularly wearing specialty Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods of time (e.g. full-face respirator, coveralls, harnesses, unique gloves/boots, etc.), walking on uneven ground frequently, working in various weather conditions including hot and cold environments, and traveling to different locations. 

Able to work comfortably and confidently in unique work settings. Depending on the project, you will be expected to work from heights (e.g. ladders, scaffolding, platforms, arial lifts, swing stages, exposed floor levels or roofs for tall buildings or other structures, etc.) in adherence to required fall-arrest/restraint safety protocols. Additionally, some projects will require you to work within confined spaces (e.g. tanks, vaults, tunnels, trenches, etc.) as defined by, and in accordance with the requirements of, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
