At the highest level in this CPG in cum b en t provides lead worker role i n t r a i n i ng ass i s t ance and guidance in below activities to lower l eve l deckhands. May also serve as a lookout to assist in the safe navigation of the ferry vesse l.

Under the general supervision of Ma ri ne Engineers, Marine C hi ef Engineers, Marine Pil o t s , Marine Op e r ators , or Marine M asters , the incumbent of this position will have the responsibility for pe r fo rmi ng the following duty assignments.

Ferryboat Deckhand 1- has a minimum hire rate of $16.06/hourly

Ferryboat Deckhand 2- has a minimum hire rate of $17.18/hourly

Ferryboat Deckhand 3-has a minimum hire rate of $19.67/hourly

To perform manual operations and routine maintenance work aboard a ferry vessel.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a Ferryboat Supervisor. May also receive guidance from a higher-level Ferryboat Deckhand or Ferryboat Operator. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Department of Transportation and Development. Other locations may be approved by SCS.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from other marine occupations by the presence of tasks aboard a ferry vessel.

Differs from Ferryboat Deckhand 2 by the absence of independence in performing routine manual tasks aboard a ferry vessel.

Examples of Work

40% Classifies veh i c l es and registers c l ass and axles of ea ch ve h i cl e boarding the vesse l and enforces restr i ct i o n s when n ec e ss ar y, collects appropriate toll, processes change and i ss u es receipts. Completes vessel passenger and veh i c l e count sheets.

30% P e r fo r ms secu rit y and safety checks on vehicles boarding a nd w h i l e the vessel i s underway. Fastens and loosens hawsers and mooring lines to piers. Operates bilge pumps, traffic ramps and gates on vessel. L owe r s and raises anchors, coils and splices rope for rope fenders and makes eyes in cable. Performs routine maintenance such a s cleaning, Chipping, sc rap i n g, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing bri g h t work, etc. Loads and unloads

material and equipment for use on ve hi cle.

20% Serves as Designated m e m be r of t h e C r ew in accordance w i th the requirement of th e vesse l 's Coast Gua r d Certificates of I nspec ti on . Assumes control of vesse l in t h e eve nt the Master b eco m es incapacitated and practices those du t i es weekly.

5% Operates emergency eq ui p m e nt suc h as firefighting hoses , fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life ri ngs , flo ats , during drills and in actual emergencies. Serves as lookout to assist in safe navigation and handles lines in r ecove r y of vessels a d r if t. Searches for and r ecove r s drowning v i ct im s. Attends required training.
