POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Vocational Assistant carries out the duties and functions of the position under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher. A competent vocational assistant will have a basic understanding of growth and development; demonstrate proficiency in behavior management, knowledge of what is to be taught, and facility in the basic skills. Such vocational assistant helps students to develop positive self-concepts, stimulates the independence of each student as a learner, and plans instruction to achieve selected objectives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year appropriate experience, or High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years appropriate experience.

Must have three (3) years of consecutive driving experience and a valid Connecticut Drivers License. Must possess or obtain and maintain a Public Passenger “A” Endorsement within 90 days of employment.

Required to participate in and successfully complete a random alcohol and controlled substance testing program as required.

Ability to acquire and maintain CPR certification within 90 days from date of hire.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrates facility in the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics.

Demonstrates knowledge of the subject to be taught.

Identifies potential risk factors and taking measures to reduce those risks in the milieu through reinforcement of positive and safe behaviors, trauma-informed and relationally-based therapeutic interventions, and reporting of suspected child abuse/neglect, according to agency policies and procedures.

Trains and participates in emergency safety interventions authorized and approved by the agency, when a student presents with an imminent safety concern.

Demonstrates basic knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the teaching-learning process.

Prepares instructional materials to achieve selected objectives.

Assists with the implementation of instructional plans.

Effectively communicates with students.

Helps students develop positive self-concepts.

Facilitates the independence of the student as a learner.

Effectively organizes time, space, materials and equipment for instruction.

Effectively meets the needs of all students.

Establishes a positive learning environment.

Behavior Management

Obtains and maintains appropriate level of training.

Follows organization policy and standards.

Meets position responsibilities

Works cooperatively with colleagues and administrators; participates in agency meetings attended (e.g. team, staff).

Follows the policies, procedures and curricula of the education programs and Wheeler Clinic.

Reports child abuse as mandated.

Continues to develop knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expression of groups served as well as uses appropriate methodological approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding of culture.
