Laboratory/Veterinary Technician

 

The Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh has an immediate opening for a Laboratory/Veterinary Technician. The applicant will assist in surgical procedures such as organ transplantation and open graft biopsies, and perform and assist with minor surgical procedures, such as lymph node excision and/or biopsies. The applicant will be responsible for the clinical management of the allograft recipient animals, including preparation for the transplant and clinical monitoring after transplant. The applicant will be responsible for the collection and processing of blood and tissue samples before and after transplantation. The applicant will perform basic laboratory techniques and assist with the initiation and maintenance of multiple cell cultures related to cell therapy and immunological monitoring the allograft recipients. This individual will collect, organize, and analyze medical and research data. Must be able to manage multiple projects, as well as help the principal investigator, postdoctoral associates, and other team members coordinating and completing their studies. The applicant should be highly motivated to learn, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently. Sound judgment, analytical and interpersonal skills are a must.

Job Summary

Provides support to veterinarians, fellow technicians, and researchers to provide laboratory animal care and research support, daily monitoring of animal well-being, and cleaning and maintenance of clinical areas. Assists with procedures, provides surgical and anesthesia support, triages cases, performs medical imaging, administers medications, and other various related duties. Maintains documentation and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations. Orders and maintains supply inventory.

 

 

Essential Functions

Frequent standing and traveling between laboratories. Excellent hand/eye coordination and computer skills required.

Physical Effort

The incumbent must be able to sit, stand and walk for long periods. May be required to move or lift objects up to 50 pounds.
