What can you Expect as an Improvement Specialist?

The Improvement Specialist supports quality improvement initiatives to achieve the highest patient outcomes and assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating performance improvement projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Skills to understand and interpret data

  • Establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families

  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and interact with frontline staff

  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills required as related to various aspects of patient care and to lead others

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking/standing

  • Coordinate and assess new clinical design projects.

  • Conduct yearly operational assessments and prioritize quality, cost, and service goals.

  • Lead or co-facilitate teams based on annual assessments and goals, and in clinical design meetings/committees

  • Create a supportive environment for redesign efforts.

  • Assess team development stages and strategize to meet goals; coach and advise team members; mentor staff and units

  • Communicate improvements to teams, staff, managers, and administrators.

  • Track progress towards goals and identify needs for practice redesign.

  • Collect and present data on process improvements.

  • Complete special projects as assigned.

  • Ensure patient care remains central in clinical design projects.

  • Influence staff acceptance of practice changes.

  • Integrate cost-saving opportunities into practice changes.

  • Consult with stakeholders to finalize and advance project goals.

  • Role model data analysis, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Participate in professional organizations for personal growth.

  • Communicate clinical design efforts through presentations and publications.

Shifts/Hours: This position will work primarily daylight shifts and may be required to work an off-shift or weekend depending on department needs.

*Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, business administration or related field required at time of hire/transfer. Master’s degree in healthcare related field preferred

  • 5 years of related experience required in nursing or business administration

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Additional clearances may be required to work in certain departments (i.e. Act 33 and Act 73 for OB floors)
