Position Title: CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

FLSA Status: Full time, exempt

Hiring range: $120,000 - $150,000

About this position

This Chief Development Officer is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of fundraising, development, and communications within the organization. This individual will create and operationalize a fund development strategy and will oversee all internal and external communications, including media relations, digital content, public relations, and community outreach efforts. This position works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership to build and execute strategic initiatives that support the organization's growth, sustainability, and mission impact. The CDO plays a critical role in expanding revenue streams, fostering key relationships, and ensuring that the organization meets its fundraising goals. In addition, the CDO oversees the communications team to ensure that the organization's message is consistently and effectively communicated to stakeholders, donors, and the general public.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Implementation:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising and development strategy to secure financial support from corporations, foundations, and government entities.

  • Oversee all fundraising efforts, including corporate sponsorships, grants, and fee for service.

  • Create and implement a strategy ideation process so the organization is more nimble when presented with new grant opportunities. 

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to leverage their networks for fundraising opportunities. Provide regular updates on development activities and performance to the board and senior leadership.

  • Provide detailed reports on development and communications activities, progress toward goals, and forecasts to the CEO, COO, and Board of Directors.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that supports the organization's brand and fundraising goals. Ensure all external and internal communications, including public relations, social media, donor communications, and marketing materials, align with the organization's mission and values.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the development and communications teams to ensure high-performing, results-driven units. Establish clear performance metrics and foster a culture of accountability and excellence.

  • Establish professional development plans for communications and fund development staff members. 

Grant Development and Communications Collateral:

  • Identify, write, and manage grant proposals to secure funding from foundations and government sources. Ensure proper stewardship and reporting of grant funds.

  • Oversee the creation of content for media, p blic statements, and messaging to ensure consistency, accuracy, and engagement across all platforms. Monitor the organization's public image and ensure that communications reflect a positive and effective presence.

Education and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in fundraising, development, or communications with a proven track record of securing major gifts and managing successful campaigns.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability with experience managing and mentoring teams in both development and communications.

  • Proven experience in strategic planning and execution.

  • Experience in workforce development or related sectors is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills;

  • Strong media relations skills and experience managing digital and social media platforms;

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others;

  • Ability to present complex information to varied stakeholders in a compelling and visually appealing way;

  • Strong ability to work cross-departmentally on simultaneously-running projects;

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask, effectively prioritize, and collaborate internally and externally;

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), G-Suite, Content Management Systems, and Google Analytics;

  • Knowledge of social media scheduling tools (Hootsuite, PostPlanner, Buffer, etc) and design software (Canva, Adobe); 

  • Strong knowledge of fundraising best practices, donor cultivation, stewardship strategies, and communications strategies; and

  • Strategic thinker with excellent organizational and project management skills.
