Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Director of Nursing for the Acute Inpatient Services Department within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Nursing is to direct the provision of care by nursing and healthcare staff within programming. Provides administrative and clinical leadership and nursing expertise and direction. Ensures regulatory compliance, programmatic integrity, and fiscal viability and expansion. Ensures that services provided are consistent with the Vision, Values and Mission Statements of University Behavioral Health Care.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Plans and oversees the delivery of nursing care within Inpatient Services.
  • Directs the administrative and clinical organization of the program.
  • Establishes clear, measurable objectives for service.
  • Ensures that program meets or exceeds objectives.
  • Directs course of action in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to intervene and make clinically sound decisions in crisis situations.
  • Interprets and complies with all regulations and professional practices governing program services and operations.
  • Actively participates in program development, implementation, evaluation, and strategic planning. Leads and facilitates the development, implementation, and coordination of program initiatives to address service gaps and programmatic goals.
  • Effectively contributes to and supports an environment that respects and enhances the individual, their expressed choices, and preferences, and that enhances the positive self-image of all individuals receiving services in his/her oversight
  • Oversees the submission of all required data reports.
  • Hires, orients, supervises, guides, directs, mentors, develops, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with funders and external constituencies.
  • Collaborates effectively with internal and external service providers, staff members, referral sources, and program funders.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of a master's degree required. Licensed to practice nursing in the State of New Jersey. Seven (7) years of progressively more responsible nursing experience with a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory/management experience within the nursing profession.
Certifications/Licenses
  • New Jersey Registered Nurse license.
  • BLS certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding human relations and leadership skills, and the ability to function in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Extensive reading required, lifting up to 10 pounds and extended periods of sitting. Ability to walk throughout the day, stand for extended periods of time, and focus on assigned tasks in a hectic, moderately noisy environment. Frequent time spent driving to various locations throughout New Jersey for meetings, trainings, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate noise.
Subject to unpredictable crisis situations, both medical and psychiatric. Occasionally exposed to individuals exhibiting aggressive and assaultive behaviors. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens, which require use of personal protective equipment.
