SMX is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Payroll with a proven track record of managing complex, multi-state payroll operations, taxes, and compliance. This role will be responsible for managing all aspects of payroll including leading and directing all payroll functions to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of payroll processing and reporting in Deltek Costpoint and ADP.

  • Provide oversight and direction of department including strategy, staff, and deliverables.

  • Responsible for overseeing and reviewing payroll.

  • Provide expertise on operational standards and lead efforts to automate and optimize Payroll workflows.

  • Review and ensure reconciliation and analysis of payroll related general ledger accounts.

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and regulations.

  • Develop and implement payroll policies and procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Manage payroll discrepancies quickly and efficiently and promptly communicate as appropriate.

  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

  • Streamline payroll processes and fully utilize Costpoint and ADP tools.

  • Enhance department structure, including roles and responsibilities, to position team for future growth.

  • Provide expertise in payroll best practices and communicate the fundamentals to individuals at all levels within the organization.

  • Develop and conduct team training.

  • Oversee the payroll aspects of the annual 401(k) audit.

  • Continue to build strong partnerships with HR and Accounting teams to facilitate workflow.

  • Attend to any payroll-related inquiries or questions from employees.

  • Supervise payroll and labor personnel including establishing quarterly goals and fostering their professional development.

  • Manage year-end payroll processes.

  • Support internal and external audits.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a minimum of 20 years of comprehensive payroll leadership with a least 4 years in a director role.

  • Proven track record of 5+ years managing Payroll administration for a Government Contractor organization with at least 1,500 employees.

  • Demonstrated experience in a private-equity platform company environment with extensive expertise in acquisition integration, optimization, and system conversion.

  • Proficiency in Deltek Costpoint Labor and Timekeeping modules and ADP WFN.

  • A strong understanding of corporate governance, internal controls, and regulatory requirements in a GovCon environment.

  • Advanced Excel skills in reporting, data analysis, data manipulation, formulas, and pivot tables.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), FAR, Labor and Payroll Laws.

  • Highly motivated and problem-solving attitude.

  • Strong sense of urgency in responding to constituents.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong work ethic and commitment to quality.

  • Self-reliance and ability to operate independently with limited direction.

  • Basic understanding of financial reports and metrics.

The proposed salary for this position is:

$145,800—$242,900 USD
