Project Engineer - New Product Research

Our exciting growth has identified the need to add a Project Engineer to join our team! The ideal candidate is curious and excited to learn about new medical technologies and the clinical challenges that come with it. The individual should be self-motivated and willing to take on projects in the very early stages of development. Our engineering team has a deep and diverse array of experience, and the ideal candidate should easily collaborate with others - both within the organization and with external suppliers and clinical experts. It is imperative that the candidate have a strong sense of accountability and take ownership in whatever task they are assigned.

Overview of the Role

The Project Engineer works closely with our New Product Development Engineers to identify opportunities and vet them for both technical and business feasibility. Once a robust opportunity is identified, Project Engineers help advance products through various stages of development.

Who You'll Work With

You will report to the Vice President of Engineering while working closely with New Product Development Engineers.

Major Accountabilities:

Investigate potential new product development opportunities:

  • Learn about new procedures, surgical techniques and clinical challenges to spot and articulate emerging opportunities.

  • Research medical technologies and current product offerings.

  • Conduct patent searches and researching intellectual property.

  • Participate in feasibility studies with end users, potentially observing surgical procedures and interviewing clinical professionals.

  • Seek new clinical applications, which may include observing surgeries, attending conferences, and meeting with clinical professionals.

Verify design specifications and manufacturing processes:

  • Own key aspects of product development effort by primary engineering contribution as well as coordinating and integrating input from other project and design engineers.

  • Develop design input requirements.

  • Collaborate on design and fabrication of prototypes.

  • Identify materials capable of meeting the requirements of the device.

  • Develop and conduct bench tests for design verification and validation.

  • Author documents for design history and design transfer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to business feasibility assessments creating a framework to vet potential opportunities.

  • Apply knowledge and experience to judge technical complexity and scope.

  • Design and conduct hands-on prototyping and testing

  • Establishes test requirements and develop/direct testing of new product prototypes to verify product reliability.

  • Maintains an understanding of clinical needs through research and meeting with clinicians.

  • Assist with regulatory approvals, which may include designing and conducting bench testing for demonstrating device safety and effectiveness, overseeing third-party validation testing, and writing technical reports

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

  • Minimum of 2 years medical device experience.

  • Experience and/or willingness to learn basic mechanical skills for fabrication of prototypes and test fixtures.

  • 3D printing experience preferred.

  • Technical writing skills preferred.

  • Occasional overnight travel required approximately 5-10%

  • Capability to obtain and maintain hospital credentialing requirements.

  • Ability to design and draft in Solidworks preferred.
