Responsibilities

The person in this position ensures that medical and/or laboratory equipment works properly, is safe to operate, and works with a high degree of reliability. Medical and laboratory equipment must produce consistent and reliable results and the service technician helps to ensures that equipment performs in this manner.

The technician must understand how equipment is supposed to operate and how the mechanical, electrical, and computer parts of the system work together to make the equipment work properly. The technician will perform preventive maintenance tasks, quality assurance testing, equipment calibrations, equipment installations, programming (if applicable), and perform corrective maintenance on a wide variety of general biomedical and/or laboratory equipment. The technician will install and configure equipment on a network and will do so in a way that maintains data security and avoids unauthorized access to protected and business sensitive information. The technician will understand and follow the policies and procedures outlined in the Medical Equipment Management Plan and use the maintenance management software to document equipment inventory and service history. The technician will work to ensure that service and support of equipment is done in accordance to guidelines established by applicable regulatory agencies. The technician will provide technical training to coworkers and give in-service education to the clinical and technical staff, and attend training both on and off site when required. Travel to support equipment at other sites and to attend training is required.

Individuals in this position must be highly customer focused with good communication and interpersonal skills. Individuals must be detailed and exacting in their work, obtain and maintain a high level of knowledge on how to support the equipment in their area, develop exceptional technical skill, and be able to work with minimal supervision.

*(Note: this position is similar to that of a Field Service Engineer (FSE) working for a biomedical or laboratory equipment manufacturer or vendor. However, unlike a vendor FSE, this position requires additional skill and experience to be competent on multiple types and manufacturers’ of equipment, with a clear understanding of how medical devices interconnect within the Mayo technical/clinical/IT environment. Similar job titles used to describe this position include; Clinical Engineering Technician, Biomed Equipment Technician Specialist, BMET, Biomed.)

Qualifications

Must have one of the 4 listed below:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science (MLS), clinical laboratory science (CLS) or medical technology (MT) or Bachelor's plus Certificate in medical laboratory science (MLS), clinical laboratory science (CLS), or medical technology (MT), as recognized by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) is required and a minimum of 2 years of experience supporting lab equipment

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a human biological science and a minimum of 2 years of experience supporting lab equipment

  • Associates degree or higher in a Laboratory Science or Mechatronics program

  • US Military Biomedical Equipment service training in one of the Laboratory Science training programs for lab technicians or laboratory scientists, plus a minimum of 2 years of experience supporting lab equipment.

A basic understanding of the physics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, biology, medical terminology used in a hospital or laboratory setting. Working knowledge of the common clinical terminology used in a clinical or laboratory setting. Working knowledge of computer networks, network configuration, computer setup and repair, computer data security requirements. Ability to use common electrical and electronic test instruments such as o-scopes, multi-meters, radiation meters. Good mechanical skills and abilities. Driver’s license. Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required. Extensive work experience advanced technical training in related fields, and manufacturer/vendor training certifications.
