How will you make an impact in this role?

The Global Services Group (GSG) is comprised of key internal and external servicing functions that deliver extraordinary customer care to Card Members, merchants, and commercial clients around the world, while providing world-class travel, credit, collections, and fraud services. Each interaction is a chance to bring the brand to life for our customers and colleagues and help build on Amex’s reputation for trust, security and service.

As part of the Global Servicing Group (GSG), the Control Management team is responsible for all core Operational Risk Management functions across GSG. The team works closely with GSG’s operations leaders, as well as other first-line Control Management teams across the company and our second and third-line partners, to ensure we have a strong control environment and risk management culture.

The objective of the GSG Control Management Testing team is to detect operational risk within GSG processes through independent and supplemental control monitoring and testing functions, enabling adherence to regulatory standards and Amex policy. The team serves as a center of excellence for monitoring across our call center operations, including conduct risk, regulatory business self-testing, procedural monitoring, and outside agency risk management.

GSG is looking for a Director of Control Management Testing to lead a global and diverse team of high-performing testers to deliver world class quality assurance monitoring, business insights, spot trends and support a continuous improvement mindset, providing Business Self-Testing monitoring oversight for GSG Card Servicing functions. This is an exciting opportunity that blends operations, risk management, and strategy to successfully identify areas of risk within our call centers.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the execution of Control Management-owned risk-detection controls for GSG, including Regulatory Business Self-Testing, Procedural Monitoring Adherence, and other monitoring controls; and proactively communicate key Operational Risk trends, activities, and events identified to senior management.

  • Support compliance with the AXP Testing methodology, including, developing and maintaining a control testing strategy, designing and developing tests for controls, and conducting tests.

  • Collaborate with other pillars within GSG Control Management to compile thematic risk reporting (levels, trends, causes) and provide actionable insights to leadership on current risk levels, emerging trends and root causes, to facilitate informed decision-making.

  • Collaborate extensively with valued partners across numerous business units, functional areas, and geographies to build meaningful long-term relationships, operating as a trusted advisor to enable pragmatic and risk conscious business decisions on complex customer and shareholder issues.

  • Lead, coach and develop a globally distributed team of 100 colleagues to deliver against enterprise objectives and individual scorecards.

  • Serve as leader for local market initiatives and drive or contribute to GSG projects and Control Management Testing ‘strategic imperatives.’

  • Provide guidance to identify and manage risks in line with second line of defense programs and policies and support Independent Compliance Testing (ICT) reviews and Internal Audit Group (IAG) audits.

  • Assist ongoing testing and monitoring of new capabilities, processes, partnerships, and third-party arrangements to enable compliance with enterprise policies, standards, and relevant regulations.

  • Help the business identify opportunities to enhance risk governance and controls across business platforms, processes, and solutions.

  • Break down complex matters into core issues and underlying causes that can be more readily addressed.

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity and remain true to values irrespective of external pressures.

  • Champion risk management practices within the business and help drive a risk conscious culture.

  • Be a key leader for sharing insights, better practices, themes, etc. across the enterprise

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6 Years experience in operational risk management (e.g., within Risk, Control Management, Internal Audit, Compliance or related disciplines) and understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities

  • Demonstrated history and ability to lead and inspire large teams, spread over geographies and with varying backgrounds.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to be both collaborative and inclusive within a team environment.

  • Proven project management skills with the ability to apply control and compliance frameworks, with experience supporting global platforms, processes, or capabilities.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to expresses ideas and recommendations clearly and succinctly to obtain buy-in from different stakeholders.

  • Comfortable working with multiple levels of leadership and influencing without authority.

  • Experience within financial services industry and familiarity with call center operations.

  • Ability to be flexible to take early/late calls when needed due to the nature of a global role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with regulators or regulated entities, as well as internal and external auditors is a plus

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Mgmt., or related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc) or certifications are advantageous

  • Experience in at least one of the following:

  • Providing identification of operational risks throughout business processes and systems

  • Leading independent control monitoring, including identification of control improvements

  • Identifying areas of risk for intervention, including conducting independent quality assurance and process testing

  • Compiling thematic risk reporting to provide actionable insights on risk levels, emerging trends and root causes

  • Workplace Flexibility: Full time. Must be amenable to follow a hybrid work arrangement (onsite and work from home)
