Job Summary

The Comcast Cloud Team is seeking a Principal OpenStack Platform Engineer to help design, engineer, deploy and operate our multi-region OpenStack Private Cloud environment using open-source technologies. Our platform offers virtual machines, block Storage and object Storage provide IaaS private cloud services that complement our comprehensive hybrid cloud strategy. Our OpenStack based IaaS platform is comprised of thousands of Linux hosts running tens of thousands of virtual machines. Bring your expertise in Linux systems engineering, virtualization, networking and troubleshooting along with a desire to solve large scale engineering problems. Security first mentality is a must.

Job Description

The Cloud Technologies Private Cloud Platform Engineering team builds private cloud platforms that internally rival public clouds in usage, performance and efficiency. Essential to our mission is to maximize availability, performance, and capacity utilization of our platforms. We develop tools that build operational awareness for our tenants and our engineering teams, we scale through automation, and we continually improve our platforms in support to provide enhanced capabilities to our tenants. 

The Principal Platform Engineer will design, deploy and maintain our highly secure our large-scale private cloud platform. This role closely supports the OpenStack SRE (Site Reliability Engineers), who are responsible for daily operations of the platform. This is a systems engineering position with focus on solving problems with code. 

This role can be based in Philadelphia, PA; Englewood, CO; Reston, VA; or Austin, TX. It is not approved for remote or Virtual employment.

Core *Duties and Responsibilities *

  • Design, deploy and maintain a highly scalable and secure private cloud platform

  • Research software, hardware and other technologies in support of advancing our private cloud portfolio 

  • Work on improving our portfolio of private cloud platform tools to better fit the cloud strategy

  • Develop automation for software services and operations

  • CI/CD systems testing experience

  • Support SRE team for L3 escalations 

  • Code in Python scripting

  • Contribute to automating operational processes for infrastructure (Infrastructure-as-a-Code) 

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Python or GoLang, including ability to write basic scripts/software 

  • Solid understanding of virtualization technology (OpenStack or VMware)

  • Expert Linux knowledge

  • Previous experience with managing servers, data centers, networking and security 

  • Experience writing Ansible playbooks

  • Recommending and implementing continuous improvements to the platform

  • Prior experience with public cloud services - AWS, GCP, Azure

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Prior experience with Ceph storage.

  • Strong experience writing software that can engage with and consume data from other systems using APIs and SDKs 

  • Prior experience and knowledge of git and peer-review workflow 

  • Prior contributions to open-source software 

  • Past software engineering projects you can show – e.g. GitHub portfolio 

  • Willingness to learn by asking questions and showing initiative to learn 

  • Ability to actively participate in team meetings, providing accurate and complete status updates 

  • Experience and enthusiasm for mentoring colleagues

Salary:

Pay Range: This job can be performed in Colorado with a Pay Range of $119,316.01 - $196,019.16
