Summary: The Wound and Ostomy Nurse (WOCN) functions as an expert consultant to the health care team and collaborates with the clinical staff to provide assessment, treatment recommendations, care and teaching to patients and families with ostomy, wound, continence and skin care issues within the scope of the specialty practice. The Wound and Ostomy Nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and support appropriate to the age of patients served in their specialty, functions as a resource and role model for the staff and participates in the application of evidence-based practice and research in the clinical setting.

Responsibilities:

Demonstrates expert judgment characterized by response- based and proactive practice.

• Establishes a presence with patients and families that increase their comfort and involvement with care.

• Assures patient/family have access to the information needed to facilitate informed decision-making and attainment of individual/family goals.

• Designs and upholds practice standards within specialty area and manifest a sense of professionalism and moral agency.

• Facilitates the professional development of others through the traditional CWOCN roles of clinician, educator and consultant.

• Collaborates with others to improve quality and clinical effectiveness by enhancing efficiency, optimal resource use and fiscal responsibility.

• Interprets and evaluates practice changes/initiatives (e.g. guidelines, Performance Improvement Initiatives) for implications to individuals, patient population and the delivery of nursing care.

• Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning

• Helps to create a non-punitive environment that encourages the reporting of medical errors and the sharing of “lessons learned” to improve patient safety.

• Guarantees care that's patient-centered, customer-centered and family-centered.

• Works with others for results.

• Takes ownership and asks to be held accountable for actions.

• Manages Resources & Processes. • Grows UPHS Knowledge & Expertise.

• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Credentials:

  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)

  • Certified Wound and Ostomy Nurse- RN CWOCN (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Required)
