Temple University Assistant Scientist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Assistant Scientist under the close supervision of the PI in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine's Shriners Pediatric Research Center, will conduct research activities involving mouse genetics, recombinant DNA techniques, and histological and immunohistochemical analyses according to the lab research protocols. This individual will be actively involved in ongoing research in the lab with the close supervision of the PI. Responsibilities include: Primarily responsible for mouse handling, colony management and maintenance, PCR-based genotyping, tissue dissection, histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural assays and microscopic imaging using bright-field, fluorescent and confocal microscopes. Independently perform mouse survival surgery, primary neuronal cultures, cell transfection and research data collection/analysis; Molecular biological techniques, such as PCR, qPCR, protein biochemistry (such as Western blotting), flow cytometry - cell preparation, fluorescent labeling and data acquisition/analysis; Making commonly used reagents, buffers, plates, etc. Maintain laboratory notebook with precise experimental records. Perform other duties as assigned by the PI. Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in a related area of study and at least 2 years related research experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required Skills and Abilities: *Demonstrated ability to independently perform Western Blot analysis, mouse genotyping; *Demonstrated proficiency in recombinant DNA technology including DNA preparation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), ligation/transformation and subcloning. *Demonstrated proficiency in immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy and imaging program such as Imaris. *Demonstrated ability to operate all standard laboratory and office equipment including MS Office and Adobe photoshop. *Demonstrated proficiency in working with excel spreadsheets for database. *Demonstrated ability to work independently. *Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. *Ability to quickly learn new techniques. *Excellent technical and analytical skills. *Ability to work in a team environment. *Strong written and oral communication skills.
