Mechanical Engineering - Pressure Boundary & Analysis (1-Year Contract)

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer - Pressure Boundary & Analysis (1-Year Contract) for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

Essential Responsibilities:

At BWXT NEC, you will report to the Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering Manager. Responsibilities of the engineer performing this role include setting the technical direction for the overall project and acting as the main technical interface point to both internal and external customers. Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering is a Mechanical Engineering function that largely focuses on the design and analysis aspects of pressure-retaining systems and components for CANDU reactors. The Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering group is responsible for the design, analysis, regulatory requirements, development and test of pressure boundary equipment for automated and semi-automated fuelling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling for nuclear reactors and related systems. This includes but not limited to concept design, detailed design, design calculations, stress analysis, design reports, design specifications, overpressure protection reports, assessments, studies, technical documentation preparation, and manufacturing, test, commissioning, maintenance and operational support.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide execution of, and lead, design/analysis/test/commissioning activities for complex mechanical equipment and systems throughout the entire product life cycle.

  • Preparation, approval or leading of design documentation (including technical documents, drawings and BOMs), technical specifications, development and test plans, and engineering quotations.

  • Preparing and verifying 3D modelling for the purposes of conceptual design, and performing stress analysis.

  • Application and leading of design for manufacturability/assembly (DFMA) techniques • Provide technical support to CAD, Procurement, Manufacturing, Test, Quality and Commissioning and Service personnel.

  • Participate in, and lead, internal and external meetings, such as design reviews, preparing and presenting technical data.

  • Prepare and/or verify project level deliverables including but not limited to evaluations, reports, and assessments.

  • Utilize classical and modern (finite element analysis) stress calculation techniques to perform or verify stress analysis for components, piping systems, supports, and vessels.

  • Maintain detailed knowledge of the nuclear codes and standards applicable to the Canadian Nuclear environment

  • Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.

  • Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.

  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, escalate resources needs as required • Provide overall Project Technical Leadership (PTL) duties for projects as required.

  • Contribute to and lead process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.

  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross functional internal teams.

  • Take an active role and responsibility in driving proposal development and review including scope review and estimate preparation as well as technical and product presentations to the customer. May be assigned Proposal Estimate Lead (PEL) roles as required.

  • Proactive and timely identification of project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership and/or executive team as required.

  • Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of design activities including, technical review and verification of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.

  • Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.

  • Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.

    KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

  • B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Holds a current PEO license.

  • Typically requires 10 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Mining, Oil and Gas, or other highly regulated and process based design.

  • Typically requires 3 years’ experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role.

  • Demonstrated ability in helping lead engineering projects and a key design team member for complex projects over their complete EPC life cycles.

  • Demonstrable experience with project schedules, working within budgets, financial metrics and other project management methodologies.

  • Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing

  • Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: systems, I&C, software design and manufacturing.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.

  • Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, demonstrated leadership skills, strong technical experience and the ability to work in a team.

  • Flexibility to work remotely on short-term customer site assignment.

    DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Experience with 3D CAD software (preference for Inventor/Solidworks) and FEA software (ANSYS APDL & Workbench, Caesar II, PEPS, AutoPIPE)

  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.

  • Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.

  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and other ASME Standards.

  • Knowledge of process system, pressure vessel or pressure boundary component design .

  • Utilize classical and modern (finite element analysis) stress calculation techniques to perform stress analysis for components, piping systems, supports, and vessels.

  • Maintain detailed knowledge of the nuclear codes and standards applicable to the Canadian Nuclear environment.

    The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $82,000.00 and $124,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
