Nuclear Fuel Services Manufacturing Lead, Target Delivery System in Peterborough, Ontario

We are looking for a Manufacturing Lead, Target Delivery System for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Target Delivery System, the Target Delivery System Manufacturing Lead position provides leadership for all manufacturing, procurement, parts/kits, fabrication and supply activities supporting the Target Delivery System (TDS) operations at Darlington NPGS Unit 2. The TDS organization is accountable for the safe and reliable operation of the TDS and will include design, development, operational support, reliability enhancements, preventative/predictive maintenance planning, outage support, and field and installation activities. The team will be accountable to the overall system health and will be comprised of Responsible System Engineers (RSE’s) including mechanical, electrical, systems, and software functions and the Manufacturing Lead who coordinates manufacturing related priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planning and leadership of all manufacturing related activities to maintain the operational requirements of TDS.

  • The Manufacturing Lead will coordinate with the TDS engineering team as well as the necessary internal groups to facilitate procurement, fabrication, test, supply and other activities necessary to support TDS operations.

  • Facilitate proper plans and schedules (level 3) with appropriate work groups, and ownership of the manufacturing cost/schedule commitments.

  • Actively participate with the TDS Manager and engineering in planning and forecasting activities.

  • Contribute directly to the support of the system. Knowledge of the design and design change process is required.

  • Provide manufacturing/manufacturability inputs to engineering designs and maintenance planning.

  • Create detailed cost estimates for supply activities.

  • Manage design changes and maintain configuration throughout the manufacturing process.

  • Assist in responding to production concerns, integrating with the cross-functional team through effective problem solving, troubleshooting and decision making.

  • Interface with key partner resources: OPG operations, BWXT Medical operations, and BWXT Field Services.

  • Provide support for regular maintenance. Portions of this maintenance may take place during a reactor outage and diligent planning in accordance with utility governance is required.

  • Provide immediate response to unplanned maintenance. Due to the sensitivity of the supply timing 24/7 support is required in response to issues that affect planned production.

  • Participate in internal and external meetings, such as design reviews, preparing and/or presenting technical data or manufacturing strategies.

  • Maintain detailed knowledge of the nuclear codes and standards applicable to the Canadian Nuclear environment.

  • Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.

  • Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.

  • Travel (approximately 20%) will be required. The core support team is stationed in Peterborough, Ontario. The TDS is operated in Clarington, Ontario. The isotopes are processed in Kanata, Ontario.

    KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

  • University degree or Technical Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems or Software Engineering.

  • Experience with the Target Delivery System design, fabrication and assembly or operation.

  • Typically requires 3 to 8 years’ experience in design or manufacturing engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Mining, Oil and Gas, or other highly regulated and process-based industry.

  • Typically requires 3 years’ experience in manufacturing environment with proven success in a leadership role.

  • Demonstrable experience with project schedules, working within budgets, financial metrics and other project management methodologies.

  • Demonstrable experience with modern machining, manufacturing and fabrication techniques.

  • Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, systems, I&C, and software design.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.

  • Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, demonstrated leadership skills, strong technical experience and the ability to work in a team.

    DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Holds a current PEO license.

  • Experience in manufacture of custom-engineered equipment, automation.

  • Experience with 3D CAD software (preference for Inventor/Solidworks), FEA software (ANSYS) or CAM software.

  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry, strong preference for on-site experience at a nuclear operating plant.

  • Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.

  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.

    The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $78,000.00 and $121,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
