U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Maintenance Worker in Peoria, Illinois

Summary About the Position: This is a vacancy for a Maintenance Worker, WG-4749-08, Illinois Waterway Project Office, Maintenance Section located in Peoria, IL. This position is being filled under the Direct Hiring Authority (DHA). Responsibilities Apply accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes to fabricate, cut, assemble, modify and repair various metal and alloy parts typically part of lock and dam facility operating equipment. When necessary, operate chainsaws, winching equipment, etc; perform clean up of recreation areas as required after replacing gravel, etc.; place riprap and replace boat ramps; drive dump, tool, and similar trucks as required for work support. Handle mooring lines and towing cables; assist towboat operator by giving hand signals; operate wench to raise and lower spuds; deck maintenance; keep engine space free of excess grease and oil; splicing of lines; greasing machinery. Perform additional duties such as painting, carpentry work, masonry and mechanical maintenance when necessary. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element applicants must show the ability to perform common Maintenance Worker tasks such as welding, maintaining equipment and determining tools, methods and sequence of work upon receipt of work orders. The work is under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: This position requires standing, stooping, bending, occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds, stretching, working in cramped positions and spaces, handling or maneuvering bulky equipment, and general continuous moderate to demanding physical effort. Working Conditions: Work crews are routinely assigned to remote locations not only within the duty location River Project, but also other area projects and potentially other MVD Districts. Work assignments are typically on an ongoing basis and are accomplished within several weeks to months. Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory. Incumbent will be exposed to all weather conditions. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
