THE POSITION

The Department of Environmental Protection is on the lookout for a qualified candidate to join their team as an Environmental Protection Specialist. This role operates under the guidance of the Water Quality Specialist Supervisor and involves engaging in professional activities focused on Environmental Protection, particularly concerning the storage tank program. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring adherence to the Commonwealth's regulations and guidelines related to storage tanks, including those pertaining to state lead initiatives such as the Storage Tanks Fund -073, as well as overseeing the removal of abandoned tanks and the execution of tank pump-out projects. You will also conduct oversight and investigations of companies and individuals certified by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for tank handling. Additionally, you will input relevant data into designated formats to comply with the data quality standards established by DEP's guidance, training, and policies across all electronic data systems. Furthermore, you will act as the project officer for all initiatives related to the removal of abandoned storage tanks and the management of abandoned tank pump-out projects within the Region. Lastly, you will be tasked with implementing the Regional Aboveground Storage Tank Program.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days a week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Wilkes-Barre.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $58,035 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a journey-level specialist in a waste management program; or

  • Two years of experience in environmental protection and a bachelor's degree with major course work in biology, chemistry, or in a field closely related to environmental protection. A master's degree with major course work in any of the fields closely related to environmental protection may be substituted for one year of the required experience ;or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which affords the applicant the required knowledges and abilities.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
