National Park Service Maintenance Worker in Pecos, New Mexico

Summary These are permanent positions located in Pecos National Historical Park, in the Facilities Division. This job announcement is open to receive applications from the first 30 applicants. Responsibilities Perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers in carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, electrical, cement finishing, masonry, wastewater plant operator, water plant operator.Construct, install, repair and replace items such as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware. Paint various types of structures such as interior and exterior metal, wood and masonry surfaces, and a variety of wooden trim and new and old cabinets. Repair and/or replace faucets, toilets, valves and troubleshoot minor plumbing problems such as change washers, clean traps, unplug sewage lines and tighten fixtures. Patch and repair roofs consisting of built up tar and paper, metal, as well as foam roofs and asphalt shingles. Mix and pour concrete/asphalt to repair or replace damaged portions of concrete walks and/or steps. Perform electrical tasks involving making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures. Perform masonry work such as maintain, repair, construct, and/or stabilize historic sites built of stone, mortar, or adobe and/or contemporary buildings, features or structures. Monitor water plant pumping equipment; regulate the amount of water coming in from one or more sources. Use and maintain tools and equipment, associated with the following trades: carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, cement finishing and masonry work. Use and operate a variety of light equipment including power wheelbarrows, concrete buggies, skid steer, forklifts and stake-side dump trucks. Operate motor vehicles such cars and pickups to transport tools, materials and equipment. Operate a forklift to load and unload supplies. Operate skidsteer with attachments to move dirt, grading work, snow removal, etc. Perform normal operator maintenance on equipment such as greasing fittings, replacing belts, cleaning filters, changing oil, lubrication, adding fluids, or changing tires. Assemble appropriate materials and supplies necessary to complete daily work projects. Provide layout and selection of materials for accuracy, completeness and adherence to standards. Select and use materials related to carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, electrical, cement finishing and masonry trades. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You must possess and maintain a current Water Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid Department of Health Services Water Treatment Operators Certificate. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
