Matheny is a special hospital for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities Mathenys mission is to provide exceptional care and an optimal quality of life for children and adults with special needs and medically complex developmental disabilities. Each patient has a primary nurse who coordinates all his/her care needs. Our nurses and nurse managers work closely with our paraprofessional care staff for on-going communication and teaching about each individual patient. We maintain close contact with families and acknowledge their importance as a valued member of the healthcare team.

Duties of this position include:

  • Demonstrates strong leadership and management skills. Communicates well with staff and fosters a supportive and motivating environment.

  • Manages all unit staff on all shifts including Nurses. Works with the Director and the Unit Coordinator.

  • Oversees services provided by Nurses, Personal Care Assistants (PCA), and PCA Supervisors for hospital units on a designated shift.

  • Ensures adequate Nursing and PCA staffing for each shift in order to meet the needs of the clients. Coordinates orientation and training of nurses and PCAs

  • Communicates performance expectations, assesses competencies, provides coaching and mentorship, and appraises job performance at least annually.

  • Collaborates with Nursing Managers, nursing administration, Deputy CNO and department heads regarding patient care issues

  • Develops strategies to address these issues in order to ensure Patients' needs are met. Supervises the DSP Supervisors with the DSP Manager

  • Provides regular feedback to the Nurse Administrator and Nursing Managers pertaining to program functioning, issues and developments that occur during the designated shift

  • Plans training for nurses and PCAs per shift, per unit on Patient Care, nursing procedures and safety measures.

  • Collaborates with the entire interdisciplinary team, patients, and families to coordinate patient services.

  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among interdisciplinary team members through ongoing communication, timely responses, and efforts to build rapport.

  • Participates in problem-solving efforts and accomplishes assigned tasks through delegation of the Nurses, DSP supervisors, and DSP's with other key members of the ID Team.

  • Ensures annual performance evaluations are completed and reviewed with all nurses on the designated in a timely manner

  • Fosters a supportive and motivating environment by providing emotional support to clients, families, and staff members

  • Ensures availability of all required equipment and inventory for clients and staff members.

  • Participates in the development of the departmental budget by evaluating staffing needs, equipment, and supply requirements for their designated Unit/s

As a Registered Nurse in a special hospital, performance of additional responsibilities that are not outlined in this job description may be required in an emergency situation. Additional assistance as a result of staff absences or shortages is also required, including additional weekend and/or holiday time.

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related Healthcare field from an accredited college or university required; Masters in Nursing or related Healthcare field is preferred - Managerial experience may be substituted for the Master’s, if the experience is in the I/DD field Previous pediatric experience in rehabilitation/disabilities preferred. At least (5) years’ experience as a Nurse manager/ Nursing Supervisor

Licensure/Certifications Licensed Registered Professional Nurse by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing. Current CPR Certification required. ACLS/ PALS certification preferred. Nurse Manager Certification preferred.
