Concrete finishers, also known as cement masons,[smooth and finish freshly poured concrete, and may also install, maintain, and restore masonry structures]{.mark}.Their responsibilities include:
- Preparing Reading blueprints or drawings to calculate materials, and laying out patterns, forms, or foundations
- Pouring Spreading, leveling, and smoothing concrete using rakes, shovels, trowels, screeds, and floats
- Finishing Creating desired effects in the concrete using trowels, brooms, or gravel.For example, a smooth finish is created by moving the trowel back and forth across the surface, while a coarse finish is created by using a broom.
- Protecting Applying curing or surface treatments, and monitoring how the weather affects the curing process
- Installing Installing iron mesh to reinforce concrete structures, rain screen water systems, and expansion joints
- Maintaining Maintaining masonry structures such as foundations, floors, ceilings, sidewalks, roads, patios, and highrise buildings
Concrete finishers may also work with iron and rebar workers, supervise laborers, and align structures using levels and plumbs.They should be able to safely operate a variety of hand and power tools, including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, pumps, power saws, buggies, trawls, pressure washers, forklifts, skid steers, and surveying and measuring equipment. Some qualifications for concrete finishers include:
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Flexibility
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Motivation
- Sense of urgency
- Organization and cleanliness
