Job Duties

Patient care responsibilities are delivered with knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.Schedules appointments for patients and enters in the computer. Maintains clinic appointment book. Prepares appointment forms for special clinics.Reviews patient schedule for the day, assembling the necessary patient charts; assures smooth flow of patients through the office and/or examining rooms.Answers patient questions and gives instructions to attempt to reduce patient's anxiety and fear; directs patient to appropriate source for problem solving.Prepares patient for medical examination and/or interview (e.g., conducts to examining room, provides proper gown); records patient's vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, temperature.Collects specimens from patients and performs procedures in accordance with protocols (e.g., EKGs, taking urine samples). Enters results in computer.Administers intramuscular medications.Administers tuberculin skin testing (PPD).Performs necessary clerical functions to assure physician orders are carried out, including filling out requests for lab tests and arranging for specimens to be picked up.Makes sure that examining rooms and procedures are fully equipped and stocked each day; neatens rooms as appropriate between procedures; disposes of trash, needles and sharp items, etc. in appropriate containers.Makes sure that appropriate equipment is available for procedures and properly set up. Reports equipment problems to appropriate individual or department.Assists physician with procedures as appropriate (e.g., sets up area for appropriate procedure, brings charts to examining room, assists patient from wheelchair to examining table).Cleans and sterilizes equipment as appropriate; returns equipment to proper storage areas.Accompany physician into the patient examination room in order to transcribe a history and physical exam, and document accurately the physician’s encounter with the patient and others present.List all proper diagnoses and symptoms as well as follow up instructions and prescriptions as dictated by the physician.Transcribe patient orders including laboratory tests, radiology tests, medications, etc., as dictated by the physician.Document any procedures performed by the physician, dictated by the physician.Customer Service: respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasant attitude, patience and helpfulness. All responses should be timely, professional, caring, and respectful in accordance with Customer Service Performance expectationsMaintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Assesses gaps in policies and procedures, and create necessary policies and procedures to fulfill these gaps.Understands and adheres to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.Familiar with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.

OTHER JOB DUTIESAnswers telephones, taking messages as needed.Participates in departmental meetings and inservices as required.Performs other related duties as required.Participates in unit committees and CQI activities as assigned.Attends monthly staff meetings.Participates in the orientation of newly hired employees.Performs other related duties as required.

BASIC COMPETENCIESEducation/LicensureHigh School graduation or equivalent required; one to two years of college preferredRegistration as a Medical Assistant required.American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.

ExperienceOne to two years of experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.

SkillsTyping: 25 WPMBasic proficiency with Microsoft Word.Good oral and written communication skills.Good interpersonal skills.Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position; knowledge of a second language preferred.JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDSContact with physicians, patients, staff.Frequent prolonged standing/walking.Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, crouching.Mobility and manual dexterity.Protective clothing worn: gloves, mask, gown.
