Amazon Senior Manager, Software Development, Search Foundational Technology in Palo Alto, California

Description

We are seeking a Senior Manager of Software Development in SET to lead innovations in various back-end services. In this role, you will set up a high caliber technology team with seasoned engineering managers and technologists, and work closely with scientists to advance the state-of-the-art service that fundamentally changes how customers discover and find products on Amazon. Strong technical foundations, unwavering focus on customer obsession, proven business acumen, and remarkable product vision are necessary to succeed in this role. In addition, you will form strong partnerships with various business teams across Amazon to understand their evolving needs in the core data model, leveraging sound judgement on common core features and the partner specific extension points to implement matching and ranking algorithms. The team that builds the service has to be at the forefront of extensibility to delight our highly technical partners.

Key job responsibilities

Primary responsibilities of the role include management of multiple software engineering teams and driving the technical vision for Search back-end. This role actively participates in developing the multi-year plans and roadmap for various services in our distributed architecture, built with Apache Lucene at its core. An ability to understand Machine Learning and NLP concepts would benefit immensely when collaborating with Applied Scientists in Search and partner teams. Product development scope for the role includes core system design, companion services, end-to-end QA responsibility, and operational and open-source excellence. The role requires delivery of a complex product at a very high-quality bar in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate has experience through multiple complete consumer product or service development cycles, and possesses superior analytical abilities and product judgment. Amazon Search creates powerful, customer-focused product search solutions and technologies. Whenever a customer visits an Amazon site worldwide and types in a query or browses through product categories, our systems go to work. We delight customers when we accurately understand their intent expressed via a query or image, and reflect that understanding throughout the search page - from layout to the search results and navigation. We make shopping effortless by helping customers easily explore our vast selection, narrowing down a myriad of options to a manageable consideration set while providing key information to make high confidence decisions with low post-purchase regret. The Search Engine team designs, builds, and delivers high performance, fault-tolerant, scalable distributed search engine used by millions of Amazon customers every day.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Engineering preferably in Computer Science (or related discipline)

  • 10+ years of experience building and managing development teams that design and deliver large distributed systems

  • 5+ years people management experience building strong teams and managing managers. A passion for people management and mentoring.

  • Deep knowledge of programming (including C/C++, Java, Scala, and REST services) and automated build processes.

  • Experience in developing platforms with robust extensibility architecture.

  • Exceptional project planning and management skills including estimating, scheduling, and executing on committed schedules.

  • Demonstrated experience in building, delivering, and operating services in a consumer-centric space.

  • Strong verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters or Doctorate degree preferably in Computer Science (or related discipline).

  • 7+ years of experience as a software developer building large modular system.

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or equivalent.

  • Experience in software development involving Information retrieval frameworks preferably Apache Lucene.

  • Experience in optimizing large scale ML/DL inference service under high scale, low latency constraints.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $198,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $342,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
