National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Electronics Technician in Palmer, Alaska

Summary This position is located in the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), Alaska Region, with two vacancies in Palmer, AK. The working title of this position is Senior Electronics Technician. As a Senior Electronics Technician you will perform the following duties: Plan, design, fabricate, install, calibrate and maintain various electronic components of seismic and sea level systems with minimal to no external guidance or support. Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on Tsunami Warning Centers (TWCs) electronic equipment to ensure equipment is operating properly. Create and maintain technical documentation and procedures related to all aspects of remote sensors, including but not limited to development, hardware/software configuration, site information and installation methods, operational status and maintenance history. Provide Information Technology (IT) support in the administration, monitoring, operation, and maintenance of the site's computer systems diverse in both architecture and platform Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), micro-computers, and associated hardware and software. CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Occasional overtime work is expected to meet work schedule requirements and resolve emergency issues that could directly affect public safety. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license and operate government vehicles to make field site visits in remote locations. Operating motorized and specialized vehicles to perform site equipment and maintenance is required. May be required to operate specialized off-highway snow-travel and other off-highway vehicles with appropriate training to perform site equipment maintenance. Physical activity is required, including walking, bending, crawling or climbing while performing field work. Work in the field (both interior and exterior) will require access to electrical manholes, mechanical rooms, ceiling and mezzanine areas not readily accessible. Required to work in cramped or confined areas; handle tools, equipment and testing devices up to 50lbs and climb equipment ladders, towers, stairs, etc. Must be able to work in potentially hazardous conditions such as power generators, machinery, obstructed work areas, high noise levels, inclement weather conditions and high voltage. Performs maintenance in elevated locations where Fall Protection training and equipment are provided and maintains proficiency in basic rescue techniques. Field trips may be required to manned or unmanned locations at any time of year by commercial and/or charter transportation, including small aircraft and watercraft. Accommodations and working conditions at some locations are primitive. Requirements Conditions of Employment A one year probationary period may be required. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-12 level: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Installing, operating, and maintaining electronics equipment; and Planning, designing or administering the testing and analyzing of observational equipment, hardware and software off and on-site. Education Additional Information CTAP and ICTAP candidates will be eligible for selection priority if it is determined that they have exceeded the minimum qualifications for the position by attaining at least a rating of 85 out of 100.
