University of Maine System Student Access Specialist in Orono, Maine

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) main goal is to create educational access to students with documented disabilities by providing or coordinating accommodations in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act of 1973, Section 504, and the American with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008, and other federal and state law and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities. In addition, SAS provides consultation and training to students, faculty and staff across campus. The Student Access Specialist will meet with students who have varying disabilities including ADHD, physical, psychiatric, health related and learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum and concussions to evaluate disability documentation and determine necessary academic accommodations. The Student Access Specialist will coordinate or oversee aspects of the provision of accommodations such as test accommodations or notetaking. The incumbent will provide expertise and training to members of the university with regards to disability issues, serve on appropriate committees and implement departmental procedures, and projects. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work successfully with a diverse population. The Student Access Specialist is expected to be student-centered, task-oriented, have the ability to problem solve, work autonomously as well as with a team, and be proficient with computers and technology. Typical hiring salary for this position is $49,000 to $51,500 commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is offered as either a 12 or 11-month work year, to be determined at time of hire. Prorated salary for 11-month work year is $44,900 to $47,200.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators as well as parents and family members

  • Effectively work with a diverse population of students

  • Knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 and disability accommodations

  • Ability to understand and interpret educational and psychological assessment instruments

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work autonomously and as part of a team

  • 3-5 years’ experience working with students who have a disability

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology or other related field.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Education or a field directly related to disability services or equivalent experience.

  • Familiarity with assistive technology including text to speech and speech to text applications, and PDF remediation

  • Knowledge of community resources for individuals with disabilities

  • 3-5 years’ experience working with students who have a disability in a higher education setting
