The role you’ll contribute:

Under the leadership of the Executive Director, the Director plans, develops, coordinates, and oversees community health, community benefit and Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) initiatives of AdventHealth in order to protect the tax-exempt status of the organization. Leads the Collaborative Community Council, responsible for overseeing all aspects of its operations, improving the quality and rigor of grant awards, developing focus areas, and measuring the impact of grants, as well as being responsible for setting and executing strategic direction as directed by the chair and council members. Represents AdventHealth as a community liaison, while cultivating and strengthening relationships with important stakeholders. Leads all Community Health Needs Assessment work, including Community Health Plans. Leads broader collaborative Mission Integration initiatives in partnership with those involved in community benefit and social accountability programs throughout the System. Responsible for connecting hospital operations teams to community partners offering clinical or social services. Educates system and corporate leadership, employees, and local board members about community benefit initiatives. Oversees tracking of all community benefit in-kind donations. Serves as an advisor to leaders in other regions of the organization on best practices. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. The Director of Community Health serves as a strategic partner and leader of the community health team to drive and enhance community health needs assessment and community health plan processes, community health improvement strategy development, and community benefit reporting. With a keen focus on social determinants of health, this role works closely with teams across the system to track community benefit reporting and to elevate our community health improvement efforts. Partners with the Director of Community Benefit (Corporate) and Director of Community Engagement (CFD) to ensure community benefit team efforts are in alignment with department goals and efforts.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Represents AdventHealth on matters related to community benefit with various external constituents, including but not limited to high priority community boards, the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Collaborative steering committee, Lift Orlando/West Lakes Partnership, Health and Hunger Taskforce, Community Benefit Conventions, as well as various internal constituents including, but not limited, to Collaborative Community Council, CHNA campus committees, and departmental steering committees and other committees as assigned.

  • Under the Executive Director, leads all aspects of the Collaborative Community Council which reports directly to the AdventHealth Orlando Board of Trustees, including setting strategic direction and managing a team that handles funding requests, new project vetting, existing project progress reports and dispersion of funds. Ensures connections between approved projects and appropriate organizational department leaders. Responsible for setting and executing strategic direction as directed by the chair and board members. Facilitates Board voting and approval of large community partnerships and sponsorships.

  • Responsible for all aspects of the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) including the Central Florida Collaborative Steering Committee and the campus CHNA committees. Creates Community Health Plans (CHP) and regularly reviews progress with campus leadership. Works closely with Community Engagement team on partnerships and funding for community organizations and the Mission team on relationships with faith institutions as outlined in Community Health Plans.

  • Leads team responsible for tracking and reporting CHNA/CHP work to ensure compliance with AdventHealth policy and regulatory standards, therefore protecting our tax-exempt status. Participates in system-wide efforts to identify, prioritize, measure, and track mission integration goals and strategies that align with AdventHealth including community health, health equity, social determinants of health, and economic development.

  • Initiates and leads the development and execution of data-informed initiatives to enhance and improve the health of targeted populations as identified in the CHNA and other sources.

  • Leads team responsible for all aspects of community benefit reporting (cash & in-kind) in CBISA software as required by corporate policy, per IRS regulatory guidelines, and seeks to continually improve this process.

  • Works in conjunction with Communications, Community Engagement and Finance to publish regular stories of community initiatives. Annually, works on the Community Investment Report for both internal and external use. As needed, provides data to inform various Community collateral.

  • Promotes and facilitates community outreach partnership development and collaborative planning. Responsible for connecting hospital operations teams and community partners offering clinical or social services.

  • Like all members of the team, develops and maintains current knowledge of community benefit principles and practices while informing/ educating appropriate leadership of current trends.

  • Develops further communication methodologies for telling the story of AdventHealth's community benefit spending and efforts. Scouts out non-clinical opportunities to execute the mission.

  • Creates an effective working environment while fostering a culture of generosity and community empathy where communication, professional development, and quality are always encouraged.

  • Oversees identification of health disparities in the community and creation of plans to address with partners.

  • As assigned, serves as an AdventHealth spokesperson and representative in the community.

  • Collaborates with the Corporate Community Advocacy Director to make Central Florida Division a model of best practices for Community initiatives across the enterprise.

COMPLIANCE/REGULATORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Works closely with Legal Affairs and Government Relations to keep leadership abreast of concerns and key industry hot topics.

  • Ensures compliance is adhered to as community organizations are brought into AdventHealth without incurring potential future risk.

  • Adheres to system standards for calculating social accountability, reporting of spending and efforts, and community benefit expenses

OPERATING & CAPITAL BUDGET/FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Provides administrative and financial oversight to a broad range of activities.

  • Directly responsible for the Community Health department budget of at least $2M.

  • Oversees the 3C grant annual budget of at least $1.2M and facilitates board approval and allocation of additional sponsorship dollars of several million dollars annually.

STRATEGIC PLANNING RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Participates in the AdventHealth System strategic planning and budgeting process.

  • Advises executives and leaders at corporate and in other regions of AdventHealth on developing strategy involving best practices in community health and outreach

  • Develops strategies and sets priorities for advancing community benefit initiatives throughout the organization.

  • Works with executives, medical staff, clinical leaders, community, and political leaders to strategically address health disparities in Central Florida.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Develops and oversees implementation of metrics tracking processes for community initiatives

  • Develops and oversees implementation of system-wide initiatives and policies to further AdventHealth's community benefit priorities and strategic objectives.

STAFFING/LABOR/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Effectively builds organization and staff capacity, developing a top-notch workforce and the processes that ensure the department and organization run smoothly.

  • Leads community benefit managers in assessing the community's health needs and assets, developing and managing community outreach initiatives and effectively measuring and reporting program accomplishments and results.

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, public health, business administration, nonprofit or related field

  • Five years of experience with a full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing

  • Prior experience working with both internal and external executive level teams, community leaders, and political representatives

  • General management experience with a thorough understanding of finance, systems, IT, marketing, and HR

  • Proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline (Healthcare, Public Health or Nonprofit management)

  • Five to ten years’ experience in healthcare environment

  • Prior community leadership experience working with both internal and external executive-level teams, community leaders, and political representatives

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrate ability to articulate complicated community health issues.

  • Strong leadership and organization skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information in understandable terms to all levels of staff in large or small groups

  • Acute attention to detail in editing and proofing written communication

  • Effective computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Ability to work in a matrix-management environment to achieve organizational goals

  • Clear understanding and articulation of internal culture and principles governing AdventHealth

  • Strong project management, budgeting, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Evidence of ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, experience, collaboration and good judgement

  • High level of business acumen, including the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget, problem solving, project management and creative resourcefulness

  • Extensive community relations and/or government relations knowledge and expertise

  • Effective relationship building and communicator experience with diverse work teams

  • Track record of building strong relationships with community organizations

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access
