Summary:

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Coordinator under the direction of the Emergency Department Unit Director assumes responsibility and accountability for forensic activities related to sexual assault survivors while maintaining responsibility as defined in the RN job description. Responsibilities include development and oversight of the SANE program day to day operations, scheduling, monitoring of fiscal, educational and quality improvement processes. Participates in and establishes relationship with other regional and state SANE programs and acquires knowledge of current and best practices in the specified clinical and management areas of forensic nursing. This incumbent accepts responsibilities delegated by the Unit Director as well as promote excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction while striving for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources. The coordinator should meet all SANE qualifications and maintains accountability for own professional practice and competency.

Additionally, the coordinator will interact with multidisciplinary persons/departments to ensure that the program functions appropriately. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

• Earned Nursing Degree at the baccalaureate level or higher.

• Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure.

• Maintain current BLS certification.

• An experienced Registered Nurse who has completed the SANE training required by State) or is in process of completing Illinois SANE training.

• Has an interest in promoting forensic nursing.

• Analytical ability.

• Communication skills are required in order to lead and teach.

• Ability to interact effectively with others in difficult situations.

• Demonstrates ability to interact with multidisciplinary teams, communicate program needs, and work with peers to establish smooth functioning.

• Ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimens, images or reports.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Previous supervisory experience, teaching, or leadership experience.

• Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).

• Membership in a Professional Organization.

Physical Demands:

• Lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.

• Ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.

• Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.

Responsibilities:

EVIDENCE BASED INTERVENTIONS

  1. Acts as a resource in current state legislation and maintains knowledge to ensure a functional program.

  2. Participates in the collection of data to support unit based quality initiatives, research and evidence based activities related to SANE program.

  3. Utilizes system wide resources to support decision making and action in care of sexual assault survivors.

  4. Recognizes patterns/groupings of problems in a sexual assault population that require investigation and initiates actions to address.

  5. Communicates current evidence-based information with peers on sexual assault.

RELATIONSHIPS AND CARING

  1. Works collaboratively with the department leadership.

  2. Establishes a caring, empathetic relationship with sexual assault patients and families through effective communication, acknowledgement of patient/family perceptions of health and illness and mutual goal setting for optimal outcomes.

  3. Provides care in a compassionate manner, adjusting timing of procedures as needed to meet the psychological and physical needs of the sexual assault patient.

  4. Collaborates consistently and effectively with other disciplines and services including other SANE programs in the region and state to meet the needs of sexual assault patients/families.

  5. Establishes good relationship with community resource personnel Provides feedback as needed to law enforcement.

  1. Utilizes competent assessment skills to holistically evaluate the physical and psychosocial needs of sexual assault patients and families.

  2. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize care for complex patients based on knowledge acquired from previous clinical experiences of sexual assault patients.

  4. Prepares and provides SANE orientation and evaluation of personnel in the SANE program.

  5. Establishes SANE annual competency and quality assurance goals. Maintains supplies and equipment as needed to conduct forensic examinations.

Demonstrates consistent safe and effective use of medical devices in the delivery of patient care. 17.Demonstrates accountability for implementing policies related to safe and effective administration of medications. 18.Individualizes teaching plans based on a thorough assessment to meet the learning needs of patients and families. 19.Maintains competency for own individual professional practice.

LEADERSHIP

20.Establishes and maintains a reporting structure to the ED Unit Director. 21.Shares all information as needed to ensure program functions.

  1. Prepares and distributes meeting minutes, and other written communication to ensure that necessary information has been communicated to leadership.

  2. Prepares a monthly SANE schedule.

  3. Communicates schedule needs to provide 24/7 coverage. 25.Assists personnel in preparing for courtroom proceedings.

  2. Attends regional/state SANE/SART Advisory Board Meetings if applicable. 30.Demonstrates the ability to provide education to staff and students on the unit.

  3. Delegates effectively and consistently to optimize patient outcomes for sexual assault survivors.

  4. Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice, including progress toward achievement of annual goals.
