Pay Range: 40.78 - 70.65

Summary:

The Emergency Medical Services Program Coordinator (EMSPC) for Rush Oak Park Hospital (ROPH) is a professional registered nurse who is responsible for coordinating the EMS activities at ROPH. The EMSPC is also responsible for establishing processes and standards pertaining to the clinical transportation of patients at ROPH. The coordinator has primary responsibilities for educational and administrative programs within ROPH as it relates to EMS with a focus on collaboration across the Rush system. This incumbent accepts delegated responsibilities, promotes excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction, and strives for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources. The coordinator should meet all EMS qualifications and maintain accountability for own professional practice and competency. Additionally, the coordinator will interact with multidisciplinary persons/departments to ensure that the program functions appropriately, exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures

Required Job Qualifications:

• Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure.

• Baccalaureate degree.

• Progressive nursing experience with three years Emergency Department experience.

• Analytical ability.

• Communication skills to lead, teach, and persuade others.

• The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine images or reports.

• Able to interact effectively with others in challenging situations

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certified.

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certified.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• ACLS / PALS Instructor within 6 months of hire.

• Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred

Physical Demands:

• Ability to walk throughout the Hospital and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.

• Lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. And lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.

EVIDENCE BASED INTERVENTIONS

  1. Acts as a resource in current state legislation and maintains knowledge to ensure a functional program.

  2. Participates in the collection of data to support unit-based quality initiatives, research and evidence-based activities related to EMS program.

  3. Evaluate, prepare, and implement training and educational programs designed to meet ECRN and recertification needs.

  4. Participate in pre/post hospital disaster training.

  5. Participate in disaster preparedness training events within EMS Region XIII.

  6. Administer EMT modular exams at assigned providers for ROPH.

  7. Management of education and quality related to the code blue and therapeutic hypothermia programs at ROPH.

RELATIONSHIPS AND CARING

  1. Works collaboratively with the department leadership as well as other disciplines and services

  2. Utilizes system wide resources to support decision making and action in care of patients.

  3. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships within the EMS system, fire departments, police departments, and Oak Park Department of Public Health.

  4. Serve as preceptor for the EMT’s hours scheduled in the ED at ROPH.

  5. Manage contractual relationships with clinical transport companies by overseeing processes and quality standards.

CRITICAL THINKING

  1. Coordinate and manage in-person clinical training for the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at ROPH.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:

  1. Collaborates with and serves as a backup for the ROPH Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for disaster management roles and activities. Serves as a bridge between the EMS system and ROPH during all drills and actual emergency events.

LEADERSHIP

  1. Shares all information as needed to ensure program functions.

  2. Oversee emergency communications registered nurse (ECRN) and paramedic care delivery and validate ROPH’s consistency with established Standing Medical Orders (SMO) and critical care pathways. Coordinate ECRN training and scheduling in conjunction with department nursing leadership.

  3. Prepares and distributes meeting minutes, and other written communication to ensure that necessary information has been communicated to leadership (monthly).

  4. Assists and shares knowledge of program functions to hospital providers

  5. Delegates effectively and consistently to optimize patient outcomes

  6. Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice, including progress toward achievement of annual goals.

  7. Apprise DEM nursing and physician leadership with status reports of EMS events and ECRN training monthly or more frequently if needed.

  8. Oversees ECRN preceptorship and ambulance ride time at ROPH.

  9. Participate in EMS Region XIII meetings, events, education, and committees. Ensures ROPH is represented in all EMS Region XIII meetings, and ensures delegate is present if unable to attend.

  10. Seve as a member of the ROPH Emergency Management Committee. Participate in ROPH emergency management drills.

  11. Establish and monitor transportation standards (score card) in conjunction with clinical and executive leadership.

  12. Serves as backup Emergency management preparation coordinator at ROPH.
