New York University Part-time Lecturer: Environmental History of Migration in Europe and the Americas in NYU Florence, Italy

NYU Florence is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach “Environmental History of Migration in Europe and the Americas” for Spring 2025 (January - May 2025). The course is taught in English, in two 75 minute lectures per week. There are 15 in-person instructional weeks, and office hours. The instructor will prepare for all classes, teach, and grade student work. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their teaching experience. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at the NYU Florence campus.

Course details

Environmental History of Migration in Europe and the Amercias aims at exploring the nexus between migration, history, and environment. The course offers an overview on the most recent research on modern and contemporary environmental history of migration. A reflection on how environmental factors, changes, and events influence migrations and how nation-states and supranational politics and policies regulate the migration processes will be central to the course. One of the focuses of the course is to analyze how migration transforms nature and how the phenomenon is influenced by the environment. Themes like identity and belonging, gender and race, healthy and disposable bodies, landscapes and cultures will be analyzed.

Qualified applicants will ideally have:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in a relevant discipline

  • A minimum of three years teaching experience at university level; experience as a graduate student instructor may be included

  • Experience with undergraduate students

  • Fluency in English and experience teaching in English

  • Eligibility to live and work in Italy prior to appointment

  • Experience and commitment to interdisciplinarity and teaching approach informed by global and local perspectives
