Support the company to translate an array of documents from all departments. Translate from English to Inuktitut, or Inuktitut to English, of texts of all levels of complexity to Baffinland departments. The scope of material the Translator will deal with is extremely broad and will consist of the translation of reports to public agencies, human resource materials, communication materials and public presentations. Company relations with the North Baffin communities, QIA, NTI and other stakeholders may be affected positively through the accuracy of finished product.

Main Accountabilities

• Provide written translation of both technical and non-technical documents using the North Baffin dialect.

• Edit/proof-read material translated by Cultural Advisors and by other Baffinland personnel or by contractors.

• Provide simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation during Baffinland-led meetings.

• Assist with selecting capable/reliable simultaneous interpreters for Baffinland community tours, workshops, etc.

• Because Inuktitut lacks standardized terminology for many expressions that are common in our work, the Translator is required to consult with language experts and Elders on appropriate translations.

• Regularly update and maintain the company Inuktitut terminology glossary.

• Maintain the whisper kits (portable interpreting equipment), compact sound system and Point Slide Projectors.

• Provide translation related administrative support to Head of Northern Affairs.

• Carry out other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Main Qualifications

• Certification from a recognized translator/interpreting training program, or education program

• Proficiency in both written and spoken Inuktitut, as well as English

• Proficiency in the use of ICI standardized orthographies for Inuktitut

• Must have a sound Syllabic writing skills, including the ability to use syllabic finals competently

• A minimum of five years’ experience in the field of interpretation or translation
