Job Description

Join Avista’s Clark Fork River natural resource team as we work towards Bull Trout recovery in the lower Clark Fork River (Montana and Idaho). The primary duty of this position is to help implement the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) plan for the recently constructed Cabinet Gorge Dam Fish Passage Facility (facility). The biologist will be responsible for data analyses and summarization in the interest of iteratively improving the performance of the facility. Several variables (e.g., entrance gate aspect, flow through the facility) are being tested to determine which are most effective at capturing target species (Bull Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout). Other data sources that are integral to the evaluation of the facility include operational data collected at the dam and facility; fish capture data at the facility and at a downstream ladder trap; PIT-monitoring equipment located in the facility and in the river downstream, and a fish counter device (Vaki Riverwatcher) and camera system inside the facility. The biologist will work with other Avista biologists and stakeholders to make recommendations for improving performance of the facility and M&E Plan. The biologist will draft technical reports and otherwise help to disseminate information to stakeholders. This position requires sound database (e.g., Microsoft Excel) and analytical software (e.g., R) skills. In addition, the applicant must have the ability to work with minimal supervision. The natural resource team implements a diverse suite of fisheries projects ranging from headwater streams to the reservoirs and Lake Pend Oreille. This position will likely assist with other projects and fieldwork as time and interest allow. Company-provided housing is available.
