UL, LLC Engineer - Fire Resistance in Northbrook, Illinois
Determine project scope for fire resistance engineering projects.
Develop a preliminary plan of investigation, and determine project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites. Initiate communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services.
Communicate with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements.
Provide technical fire resistance engineering assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
Establish appropriate fire resistance test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements.
Must be familiar with applicable Fire Resistance UL 263 and ULCS101 standards, company manuals and appropriate technical literature.
Examine samples for compliance with UL requirements and notify client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering assistants and establishing completion dates.
Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
Resolve engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations for fire resistance technical inquiries. Assist in the development of UL requirements.
Assist in developing special test methods and test equipment. Analyze test program for adequacy and sequence.
May coordinate and/or perform File Reviews, as directed.
May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
20% domestic travel required. 40% remote work permitted.

Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical or civil engineering and one (1) year of experience as an Engineer, Engineering Intern, or Project Handler
Must have work experience in each of the following:
1) experience applying UL 263 and ULCS101 standards;
2) analyzing acceptance criteria using Labware for fire resistance certification;
3) analyzing test assembly to determine hourly ratings of fire-resistant;
4) 40% remote work permitted;
5) 20% domestic travel required; and
6) Must have Fire Protection Certification.
