UL, LLC Electrical Design Engineer- Building Systems in Northbrook, Illinois
UL Solutions has a global network of complex testing laboratories, and we are growing and evolving to address new emerging technologies in the marketplace. As an Electrical Engineer focused on laboratory construction, your role will involve designing, implementing, and maintaining electrical systems within research facilities, laboratories, and industrial settings. Your expertise will contribute to the safe and efficient operation of scientific equipment, lighting, and power distribution. Reporting to the Architect and Design Lead in the Construction Team, the Electrical Engineer will partner with Facility Planners, Customer Operating Units, Electrical Engineers and CAD planners to design labs from ideation to concept designs, and partner with external vendors globally to develop designs and construct facilities.
This role is hybrid on-site in Northbrook (3) days a week
System Design and Implementation:
Collaborate with architects, project managers, and key stakeholders to design electrical systems for projects as assigned.
Develop schematics, wiring plans, and layouts for lighting, power distribution, and instrumentation.
Areas of concentration include building power distribution systems, and lighting and low voltage auxiliary systems including fire alarm, security, data networking, and audio-visual equipment
Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
Be part of design and construction team to develop conceptual plans and budgets, value engineering and bring concepts to reality
Partner with external engineering firms globally to take concept design through construction documents and execution, ensuring design standards are met
Equipment Integration and Testing:
Select and integrate electrical equipment, including lab instruments, control panels, and sensors.
Oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues promptly.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:
Optimize energy usage through efficient lighting, HVAC controls, and smart systems.
Implement renewable energy solutions where applicable.
Promote sustainable practices within the laboratory environment.
Safety Protocols and Compliance:
Design emergency shutdown systems, fire alarms, and safety circuits.
Ensure adherence to OSHA, NFPA, NEC, and other relevant guidelines.
Conduct risk assessments for electrical installations.
Documentation and Reporting:
Create detailed technical documentation, including electrical drawings and specifications.
Work closely with Design and Construction Team, Project Stakeholders, and external Design & Construction Firms.

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in electrical engineering for laboratories.
Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
Proficiency in Revit, Bluebeam and MS Project
Strong Microsoft Office Skills (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Knowledge of regulatory requirements (UL, FCC, FDA) for lab equipment.
Familiarity with automation and control systems.
