Job Description

Investigative Toxicology and Pathology group within Preclinical safety department is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Scientist to join our team to perform lab based molecular toxicology work. This position in Molecular toxicology subgroup entails conducting fit for purpose toxicological evaluations of drug candidates, examining tissue/system responses to compound exposure, and elucidating of mechanisms of toxicity utilizing the novel in vitro (focusing on immune competent MPS/complex in vitro models) and ex vivo systems incorporating genomic and imaging technologies. Candidates would be expected to build, characterize, evaluate, and implement new in vivo relevant human and preclinical species complex in vitro/MPS models for drug development applications. Also, would be responsible to support routine investigative toxicology assays/screening for drug discovery and development programs. Opportunity to interact and work closely with project toxicologists and other colleagues in the group including molecular biologists, computational toxicologists, and veterinary pathologists. Candidates will have support to be involved in external consortium activities with an opportunity to share investigative toxicology results in key external scientific meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently generate plan for hypothesis driven research to predict and/or to understand potential mechanisms of toxicities supporting preclinical and clinical stages of drug development.

  • Build and characterize novel in vivo relevant human in vitro (e.g., 3D spheroids and MPS) and ex vivo platforms. In addition to human models, contribute to building and optimizing preclinical species in vitro models as relevant to understand cross species translatability and mechanistic understanding of species-specific toxicities.

  • Implementing high content imaging and genomic (bulk sequencing and single cell sequencing) endpoints in in vitro assays

  • Implement learnings from in vitro and ex vivo studies to identify appropriate biomarker for exploratory in vivo studies

  • Oversee complex in vitro model related activities within preclinical safety and train junior technical staff

  • Interpret data, summarize and communicate with project team and other key stakeholders

  • Identify opportunities to present the data at external meetings and publish key results, and assist/design in vivo investigative toxicology studies to understand mechanisms of toxicity and/or to identify new potential safety biomarkers.

  • Responsible for maintaining lab equipment’s and resources related to in complex in vitro models

  • Generate reliable and consistent results to further project goals in a timely manner.

  • Analyze and interpret results and formulate conclusions from multidisciplinary experiments, design and pursue relevant follow-on experiments.

Qualifications

In addition, successful candidates will have the following:

  • PhD in Molecular toxicology, Immunology, Pharmacology, Cell/Molecular Biology or related field with typically 0 to 5 years of academic or industry experience in building and characterization of complex in vitro models to support efficacy and or safety evaluation.

  • Strong knowledge of complex in vitro models/MPS with technical proficiency in standard cellular and molecular biology techniques

  • Previous experience in toxicology, drug discovery and/or translational research is preferred.

  • Experience in incorporating immune cells in in vitro models and using these models to detect immune mediated toxicity is a plus

  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, critical thinking / problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal/team skills.

  • Knowledge of small molecules and large molecules drug development and key safety challenges.

  • Knowledge of high content imaging

Position will be filled at level commensurate with extent of education, experience, and accomplishment.

Sr Scientist I or Sr Scientist II
