Job Description

The Global R&D Study Forecasting Manager is responsible for managing the activities of the study forecasting group specific to a Therapeutic Area. The manager drives the planning and execution of forecasting outputs and analysis for Plan, LBE, LRP and Portfolio submissions.

The manager has a high level of technical knowledge across the clinical studies and establishes standards across the team by coordinating analysis study cost valuation and reviewing contracts for funding approval. The manager is an integral partner for the clinical product development and business development organizations by providing consultative study cost information and is crucial in ensuring business stakeholders get the insights and analysis needed for governance driven decisions. The manager also leads key process initiatives and is a subject matter expert for clinical study savings projects.

Major Responsibilities:

  • The Manager, is the study forecasting lead for a designated therapeutic area, leading a team of analysts to partner with the clinical and medical organizations, and has a solid understanding of how clinical trials run.

  • The manager has a high level of technical knowledge across clinical studies, and is able to review clinical study designs, expected pace of enrollment, dosing schedule, study assumptions and funding approval for contractual study agreements for sites and vendors

  • Accountable for ensuring that the team provides accurate prediction of clinical trial operating expenses, using cost driver-based algorithms and pulling together data from multiple systems in a timely manner to meet the financial and portfolio management deliverables and submissions. Ensures workload is reasonably distributed across team members with varying levels of experience.

  • Highly competent in analyzing clinical contracts, evaluating historical data trends and combining formulas to develop prediction algorithms.

  • Responsible for managing team to follow defined financial processes by updating previously established forecasts at a regular cadence (monthly LBEs, Quarterly R/OSS reviews, 50%/100% enrollment timepoints, annual cost validation), as well as managing to the status of the study being forecasted (startup, Main R/OSS, reconciliation and close-out).

  • Proactively understands the interdependencies of clinical trial study costs to explain and provide clear concise financial advice and transparency to both clinical and finance partners

  • Provides guidance to their team to conduct scenario planning and costing of clinical studies to support portfolio submissions, key strategic governance meetings and business development opportunities

  • Ensures a cross-functional mindset across their team by driving partnered interactions with both external and internal stakeholders and leading by example to drive continuous improvement as well as leveraging expertise to recommend best practices, and system and process improvements.

  • Demonstrates ability to characterize and summarize clinical trial costs and synthesize data into forecasts and build financial models. This includes leading their team to increase their modeling and analytical skill sets by walking through and summarizing available data and analysis.

  • Develop and train staff members to expand their skill sets while positioning their team to be ready to support the growing needs of the business

  • Supports the growth and development of direct reports.

  • Has a strong performance mindset and focuses on teamwork, relationship-building, acting courageously and constructively, and has a high level of agility and accountability

Qualifications

  • BA/BS required. Degree in finance and/or health/life sciences preferred with a minimum of 8+ years of progressive relevant experience.

  • Strong communication, presentation and inter-personal skills

  • Thorough understanding of financial management, budget processes, forecasting, data analysis and expense valuation metrics

  • Strong clinical trials operations knowledge and drug development process

  • Ability to develop new ways of working and understanding the function of Forecasting in R&D and create robust business processes related to the Forecasting function.

  • Experience building teams with the appropriate mix of capabilities, as well as coaching and training team members to be collaborative business partners

  • Proven track record of working effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced,

    cross-functional environment; ability to represent the work across all functions is a plus

  • Perform quality oversight to ensure integrity and accuracy of forecasting outputs

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and demonstrated ability to delegate to staff in order to manage multiple priorities and drive agility and accountability.

  • Self-starter with ability to operate independently, drive processes, identify and implement process improvements, establish and adjust priorities to achieve objections and operate with speed and agility.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, prioritize and respond to changing needs of the business
