Hackensack Meridian Health Pathologist Assistant - Per Diem in North Bergen, New Jersey

The Pathologist Assistant assists Pathologists in examination of specimens and accessions specimens for identification purposes at Palisades Medical Center (PMC).

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Pathologist Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Performs, under the supervision of the pathologist, gross description and dissection of surgical specimens and preparation and staining of slides in frozen section cases.

  • Receives verifies and accessions surgical and cytology specimens.

  • Processes and prepares fluid specimens for cytologic examination and ensures the quality of preparation and staining.

  • Prepares necessary materials and assists the pathologist in the immediate assessment of specimen adequacy during targeted core biopsies, bone marrow biopsies and fine needle aspiration biopsies conducted at Interventional Radiology.

  • Prepares, submits and expedites as needed, specimens for transport for further processing and/or testing in other facilities or reference laboratories as ordered by the pathologist. Coordinates with the receiving facility to ensure smooth, efficient and timely processing.

  • Assists in the release of decedents from the morgue to funeral directors; assists and prepares decedents, in coordination with Patients Relations, for viewing when requested.

  • Organizes and maintains the filing of slides of surgical and cytology cases that have been signed out, responsible for disposal of old cases in accordance with CAP guidelines. Retrieves slides of old cases when requested, and re-files them when returned.

  • Responsible for the disposal of outdated histology and cytology specimens in accordance with CAP guidelines and Hospital Waste Policy.

  • Works closely with the pathologist and laboratory personnel to ensure the timely and accurate reporting of all histology and cytology specimens.

  • Ensures the smooth operation of histology and cytology processes, including the proper receipt, accessioning, examination and result reporting of surgical and cytology specimens.

  • Responsible for the quality of work, the care and function of the equipment, availability of supplies, cleanliness and safety needed in the section.

  • Plans and organizes work to provide an organized and efficient workload. Ensures that the work performed in the section is completed in a timely manner.

  • Works with the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Manager in the planning and implementation of objectives for the section.

  • Implements and enforces Department and Hospital policies.

  • Responsible for updating grossing templates, as needed, with the assistance from the pathologist.

  • Prepares the section for on-site inspections and completes inspection accreditation reports for pertinent agencies.

  • Supervises the orientation and in-service education of new personnel assigned to the section.

  • Assists, initiates, institutes and accomplishes other related duties and procedures as may be designated by the pathologist.

  • Attends continuing education programs when possible.

  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related science.

  • Two years of experience at a hospital laboratory performing technical duties relating to Anatomic Pathology.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) eligible.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • ASCP certification.
