Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Park Ranger I. The Park Ranger I will be responsible for maintaining park security by patrolling (unarmed) and greeting visitors to City recreational facilities. This position will enforce city codes and act as the first point of contact and educates visitors on the use of recreational facilities.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
The main responsibility of a park ranger is protecting and supervising designated outdoor areas. Park rangers patrol the grounds and make sure that campers, hikers, and other visitors are following the rules--including fire safety regulations--and do not disrupt the natural environment or fellow guests. Also responsible for giving guided tours or presentations of the park. Work in the visitor center, providing guests with maps and areas of interest and areas that are off-limits. Conduct search-and-rescue missions, initiate conservation efforts, help fight fires and enforce the law.
Monitors the use of all City recreation, enforces City policy and codes pertaining to the use of athletic fields, parks, and recreation areas. Issues citations and makes arrests as needed. Acts as the first point of contact for visitors utilizing park facilities; greets and educates visitors on facilities. Opens and closes park facilities. Cleans and prepares picnic shelter rentals for customers, prior to arrival. Examines recreation grounds and cleans as needed. Performs general safety inspections on facilities.
Maintain stock of various athletic equipment used 4-lithe recreational area.
Navigates permit database to issue the proper permits to customers and ensure all of those using the athletic facilities have approved permits.
Acts as a liaison between the department and the Norfolk Police Department.
May assist in the preparation of athletic fields before events including lining playing fields.
Assists visitors in recreation facilities by responding to questions about services and offering directions.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Six months experience in a related field.
Experience in law enforcement, military, or park operations preferred.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Driver's License.
Certification as a Special Police Officer or Conservator of the Peace; may be granted upon hire.
CPR/First Aide certified within six months of hire.
Work Location: Lakewood Athletics Office, 1612 Willow Wood Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509
Work Hours: Sunday - Saturday. Hours vary, flexible schedule required
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
