Location: Norfolk, VA (onsite)

Experience Level: Expert

Employment Type: 4 month contract to hire (permanent)

Salary: $20-22hr based on experience

Hours: M-F 8-4:30pm

Job Description:

Day to day responsibilities-

The job will be broken up in a few buckets

First thing they are going to do is review the office charges from the previous day that the providers inputted

Pull them up in their system to see if they are in a Global period (GLOBAL PACKAGES - example: if someone had their appendix removed there is a 90 day global period, meaning the insurance company pays 1 lump sum for the procedure and any follow up appointment for 90 days after the procedure)

Go into the hospital system (EPIC) to see if any charges are not entered in yet

They will need to look at a diagnosis code and make sure they pick the correct one if it is incorrect - look at provider notes to see what level of code is needed

Looking to see if they need to put modifiers on the charges

When they pull up each patient - check the insurance verification on them and make sure they have the correct insurance and authorizations- this is very important as they have had issues in the past where insurance info is incorrect and all charges get denied

They would then submit the charge

This could take about 3 hours per day

The next thing they would be doing -

Insurance follow up tasks from the medical group

EVMS Medical group (which is the centralized follow up office for all EVMS practices) will send tasks back to them if the claims were denied

Any tasks that bounce back due to incorrect information, unspecified diagnosis codes, etc.

Sometimes modifiers will need to be added

Other denials from the insurance companies

This can take a while depending on the volume - would like to have these tasks cleared out weekly

Have no control when the medical group sends the task - usually send in bulk

Another thing this person will handle - Registering patients from the inpatient billing reports

They will pull the report and would register the patients - meaning they would pull the report up in EPIC - they would get the sheet and enter in the name address DOB and insurance and make sure everything is correct

They will also verify the insurance for all patients

Additional tasks-

Get calls from the front desk and schedulers asking for global periods - because the patient is calling about an appointment so seeing if they are in the global period

They will also reach out to patients who have large balances who have appointments coming up - get them to pay over the phone (they cant set up payment plans but medical group can so provide that phone number)

A lot of research and looking in payer portals to see insurance package and what is covered. Need to be really great with insurances
