Navy Exchange Services (NEX) DESIGN TECHNICIAN in NORFOLK, Virginia
Title: DESIGN TECHNICIAN Location: United States-Virginia-Norfolk Job Number: 240003VQ Job Summary: The individual in this role is responsible for the development of plans, designs, and construction documents. This includes overseeing renovations, expansions, and new construction for NEX facilities. Duties and Responsibilities: - Design and develop a diverse range of functional space layouts and specifications, addressing operational factors, space allocation, interior and exterior design, master planning, construction budgeting, and equipment selection, as well as utility requirements such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and refrigeration. - Review Architectural and Engineering (A&E) plans and specifications, providing comments and recommendations regarding layout, interior design, equipment and furniture selection, utility requirements, and placements. - Assess layout requirements, functional and operational needs, space allocation, inter-relationship of spaces, equipment and fixture design, customer traffic flow, patron needs, and comfort. - Collaborate with NEXCOM codes and Navy Exchanges to develop and implement merchandise fixture designs and standards, merchandise department space allocations, new shop concepts, and construction policies. - Conduct advisory visits to Navy Exchanges, either individually or as a team leader, to establish functional equipment layouts and interior design for renovations, expansions, and new or renovated facilities. - Identify equipment requirements, position them within layouts, estimate costs for A&E designers and contractors, and prepare requisitions for bids. - Maintain a library of equipment, furnishings, materials, and manufacturers related to specialty areas. - Evaluate and provide recommendations on proposals for expansion or renovation, considering feasibility, cost, layout efficiency, and functional requirements. - Stay current with the latest AUTOCAD and related computer-aided design systems pertinent to the retail and construction industry. - Operate under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, receiving assignments and providing periodic reports on work progress; completed work is subject to review for compliance with technical standards and guidelines relevant to the project, including equipment selection and optimal arrangement for functional and aesthetic needs. - Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: GENERAL EXPERIENCE A minimum of three years of experience is required, which has equipped the candidate with knowledge relevant to developing skills in measurement using required instruments, interpreting architectural engineering drawings or specifications, and other architectural technician tasks. OR SUBSTITUTE OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE One year of related academic study beyond the high school level may be substituted for each year of general experience. Additionally, for each year of specialized experience, one year of academic study may be substituted for every six months of specialized experience. Education that is considered as a substitute for experience should encompass at least nine semester hours per year in courses such as engineering, architecture, industrial technology, construction drafting, or other related disciplines. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE A minimum of one year of responsible experience in nonprofessional work is necessary, which has provided knowledge of relevant principles, methods, and techniques in architecture related to construction, renovation, and expansion projects.
