Old Dominion University invites applications from qualified academic leaders for the position of Dean of the Graduate School.

With the merger of Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School completed, the Dean of the Graduate School is a unique opportunity for a proven leader with a passion for innovation to be part of the academic leadership team to help create this future.

The Dean of the Graduate School is responsible for:

  • Creating an infrastructure that supports excellence in graduate education.

  • Developing and promoting diverse graduate programs.

  • Enhancing the graduate school experience to enable student success.

  • Enhancing graduate student quality of life

  • Promoting graduate education outside the university.

The new leader will play a significant role in advancing the Graduate School’s mission of supporting graduate programs, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows by coordinating and optimizing available resources and advocating for new resources; ensuring policies and practices are developed and applied; and advocating for graduate education. The Dean will be a visionary and transformative leader who will drive the strategic direction within graduate education through collaboration with faculty, staff, and administrators.

The Dean will ensure that the goals of the Graduate School align with diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, research, interprofessional education, and external community connections all while fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration among faculty, staff, and students. They will be energized by bringing teams and people together in a transparent, honest, and compassionate way.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications

An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the University.

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • A distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and professional accomplishments that merit appointment as a Full Professor with tenure in one of the academic units.

  • Experience teaching graduate-level courses and providing direct mentorship to graduate students.

  • Substantive and sustained administrative leadership involving strategic direction.

  • Experience with graduate and international student admissions processes.

  • Experience overseeing and improving institutional policies and processes.

  • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff, with a proven track record of promoting these values.

  • Experience with managing resources including budget and staffing needs.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Involvement in the development of academic programs.

  • Administrative leadership experience within graduate education.

  • Experience implementing technologies that can enhance the graduate student experience.

  • Experience collaboratively working with community and campus groups.

About the College

The Graduate School was formed in 2016 and currently consists of nine faculty positions, three classified lines, and three graduate assistants. The Graduate School is responsible for coordination of graduate education administration; oversight of the Graduate Administrators’ Council; approval of new courses, programs and certificates; oversight of the continuance process for students; training for graduate program directors and graduate teaching assistants; facilitation of various graduate related events; assisting with the resolution of student issues; and oversight of graduate admissions. The Graduate School also includes the Office of International Collaborations and the English Language Center, partnering with international organizations across the globe.
