Job Description

The School of Data Science at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an annual, 10-month position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank as part of a multi-position hiring initiative for Data-Driven AI and Its Transformative Impact on Special Education Serving People with Chronic Health Conditions & Disabilities. We seek faculty that to develop/maintain a vibrant, externally funded interdisciplinary research program in artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) and data science, with focused application in special education and overall education areas including,

  • Emotional intelligence with earlier and better understanding,

  • AI-driven adaptive learning systems,

  • AI-driven therapeutic systems,

  • Immersive virtual learning environment,

  • Predictive analytics on behavior data and symptomology

  • AI-driven visual perception for special education.

The focus of this cluster hire is the interdisciplinary area of data-driven AI and its transformative impact on special education that serves people with various chronic health conditions and disabilities. AI and Machine Learning (ML) techniques are poised to significantly change many practices in special education, from emotional intelligence with earlier and better understanding of behavioral and neuro-cognitive deficits. Development of AI-driven adaptive learning systems, AI-driven therapeutic tools, immersive virtual learning environment and predictive analytics may benefit from availability of large-scale behavior and neuro-cognitive data. A few well-recognized examples include use AI-based computer vision techniques to recognize and identify subtle visual signs for early detection of autism spectrum disorder ( ASD ), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD ), developmental disabilities, and Alzheimer and other dementia.

The appointee will also teach undergraduate and graduate courses and collaborate with other faculty in School of Data Science, Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology, and Darden College of Education & Professional studies. The appointee is also encouraged to establish collaborations with the newly formed Brock Virginia Health Sciences, as well as data scientists at the nearby Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC).

As the first step of that initiative, we seek to hire 25 scholars who can contribute to the university’s growing research and teaching portfolio in the area of artificial intelligence. Those scholars will be housed in departments across campus and work together on scholarly activities related to artificial intelligence.

A Ph.D. or equivalent in Data Science, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related field is required.

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

Candidates applying for a senior faculty appointment (Associate Professor or Professor) must have academic records that merit a tenured appointment in the School of Data Science.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong publication record in data sciences/AI/ML.

  • Strong record of externally funded grants.

  • Excellent skills to interact and communicate clearly with internal and external constituencies.

About the Department

As one of the three academic units in the Interdisciplinary Schools at Old Dominion University, the School of Data Science is a new initiative that focuses on educating students in the rapidly growing field of data science, conducting cutting-edge research and serving as a center of AI education and research in the University community. Since its establishment in spring 2023, the school has grown to include ten core faculty members and over 80 affiliated faculty members across the campus, with wide range of active research projects from bioinformatics, web science, survey data science to scientific machine learning, explainable AI and generative AI. Faculty of the School of Data Science actively collaborate with researchers from renowned facilities such as Jefferson Lab (sponsored by Department of Energy), NASA’s Langley Research Center, Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium ( HRBRC ), Brock Virginia Health Sciences ( BVHS , formerly EVMS ), and ODU’s Office of Enterprise Research and Innovation ( OERI ).
