Under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Services and within the area of his/her professional expertise, the Building Substitute Teacher will instruct students using methods that are consistent with the programs of study adopted by the Board and school. The Teacher will work cooperatively with staff members to implement effective educational programs and deliver appropriate services to students in the absence of a classroom teacher. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. • Implements programs of study and fosters a classroom environment conducive to learning and growth that is consistent with the school's mission in the absence of a classroom teacher. • Covers any class or student supervision activity, kindergarten through 6th grade, including enrichment classes, tutoring, and special education classes, upon request • Collaborates with classroom teachers, intervention specialists, support staff, instructional leads, administration, and other school staff to develop and maintain a school culture and climate that maximizes growth of every individual. • Implements lesson plans based on curricula adopted by the school and Board in the absence of the classroom teacher. • Implements interventions and supports, in consultation with intervention specialists, in the absences of a teaching assistant. • Provides reading instruction to students in accordance with the school's adopted reading curriculum in a small group setting. • Follows school's established discipline and classroom management procedures and policies and establishes classroom procedures and rules that enhance learning. • Fosters a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school climate conducive to student growth that is consistent with the school's mission and holds students to high expectations. • Provides Tiers 1, 2, and 3 Response to Intervention (RTI) support and tutoring to students with documented needs in one-on-one and small group settings. • Provides classroom accommodations according to student IEPs, 504 plans, and Functional Behavior Plans. • Communicates effectively with fellow staff members on a regular basis. • Assists with state and district testing as requested by the testing coordinator. • Participates in additional training and professional development as designated by the Director of Student Services, instructional leads, and the district. • Participates in schoolwide teams and committees to promote holistic solutions to meeting student needs • Maintains high level of confidentiality, abiding by HIPAA & FERPA laws • Actively seeks out professional development opportunities and continuous improvement, remaining current in knowledge of best practices and research in area of practice • Additional duties and support as required by teachers, school staff, and the Director of Student Services, including but not limited to arrival, dismissal, recess, and lunch duties. COMPETENCIES • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, problem-solving, flexibility, and time-management skills. • Strong oral and written communication skills. • Skill in exercising tact and discretion when communicating with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff, maintaining a high level of confidentiality. • Ability to interact with students to maintain discipline, order, and resolve disciplinary problems. • Ability to assist students with various physical, social, and intellectual needs. • Ability to handle behavioral situations in a calm and effective manner.
