Assistant Scientist - Organic Lab Location(s): Granville, OH, US, 43023-1200 Function: Research and Development Audience: Experienced Professional Work Arrangement: On Site Requisition ID: 63510 OC Business Title: Technician (7B) Job Title: Assistant Scientist Job Code(s): Revision Date: October 01, 2024 PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Enterprise R&D team has an opening for a qualified assistant scientist to undertake various analytical tasks and procedures in the organic section of the Analytical team. We are looking for someone that is flexible, self-driving, and eager to learn/retain various analytical chemistry techniques. This position is a key player in supporting the technical needs of all of OC's business units around the globe. The role will be comprised of primarily routine and non-routine samples preparation along with completing qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on a wide range of organic materials using a large platform of instrumentation. This will include the characterization of various raw materials used to make our products as well as the finished product itself. The incumbent will be a key player in a team-focused environment and be able to work both independently and with others. The ideal candidate should be committed to the Owens Corning Safer Together initiative and demonstrate capability in working with typical laboratory chemicals. Reports to: Organic Lab Leader Span of Control: JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in group safety functions (10%) Continuous commitment and attention to safety in the laboratory working environment Dedication to housekeeping, safety meetings, and special safety initiatives and projects Participation in monthly safety meetings and safety days; housekeeping audits Authoring SOPs, JHAs, MOCs for new method development and implementation Laboratory Operations Support (25%) Support routine operational tasks within the Organic and other Analytical lab using established methods and SOP and via new test additions, template creation and data acquisition Implement established and rigorous QC for testing and preventive maintenance plan for instruments in the Organic lab Sample preparation and instrumental analysis of organic materials (65%) Classical and wet chemical analyses and general sample preparations (pH, titration, weighing, extractions, liquid reflux, etc.) Utilize software and instrumentation for the analyses of samples prepared (UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Liquid Chromatography, and Pyrolysis.) Follow detailed methods and procedures, communicating observations and results Utilize LIMS to manage tasks for efficient operation of the lab Provide quality repeatable and reproducible testing results without errors Maintain instruments and equipment; identify consumables to be ordered Generation of ideas for continuous improvement of lab processes or methods JOB REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 4-year college degree in a hard science, B.S. in chemistry with analytical chemistry focus preferred 2+ years of experience working in a laboratory setting PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Diverse experience with analytical instrumentation Safely working with laboratory chemicals Proficiency in MS Office and ability to quickly learn to navigate instrument specific software Working knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) preferred Attention to detail while performing repetitive work
