Posting Summary | Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant for NJMS- Microbiology, Biochemistry & Molecular genetics. The Temporary Research Assistant will pursue efforts at developing an assay to identify small molecule blockers of protein biosynthesis in microbes for the development of new antibacterial drug treatments. The assay measurees the physical assembly of the complex between Ef- Tu and tRNA, the key components of the ribosomal translation machinery in the microbes, in a GTP- dependent manner.Among the key duties of the following:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | 1. Protein and tRNA purification and analysis and for preparations for HTS 2. Protein and nucleic acid expression and purification, expression in a bacterial system, chromatographic separations, protein and nucleic acid labeling, and fluorescence methods 3. Performing protein biosynthesis and in vitro translation assays 4. Conjugation of fluorescent dyes to the components of the ribosomal translation system and characterization of the conjugates by fluorescence spectroscopy 5. Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. 6. Performs other related duties as assigned. 7. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers' regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified. |
Preferred Qualifications | 1) Protein and nucleic acid expression and purification. Expression in bacterial systems, and chromatographic separation using FPLC and HPLC. 2) Protein biosynthesis and in vitro translation. Experience with tRNAs biochemistry. Protein structure and function. 3) Fluorescence methods. Conjugation of fluorescent dyes to proteins and nucleic acids. Characterization of fluorescent reagents by fluorescence spectroscopy. fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). 4) Molecular biology. DNA cloning and mutagenesis, restriction analysis, DNA sequencing, PCR, bacterial fermentation. 5) Structure-function relationship in proteins and nucleic acids. 6) Experience with high-throughput (HTS) screening is helpful. 7) Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to publish scientific research papers/articles and reports. Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. |
